  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
63' MOTOR YACHT (1985 - 1987)
Hi, I'm new to the forum, and looking to purchase a "Hattie". I've seen the Classic 53/58 and a 56 wide body, but never seen a 54 Motor Yacht. They were only made a few years and are a cored hull. Anybody want to render a opinion on them, pro/con..any 54 owners out there?

You may want to touch base with John Gray, a past president of the Hatteras 1510 club. He recently purchased one after his 53' Classic was totalled after a shed collapse. He can be reached at JOHM.GRAY@GE.COM Yes it is "JOHM" with a "M" and you need the dot between the name.
He is away on vacation at this time so a response may not be immediate.
Hope this helps.
Ben

are you sure the hulled is cored or is it just above water line?

the non ED 54 is probably the "ideal" MY... just like the classics it has the open saloon and msot importantly the big open aft deck with good ventilation thru the side decks with the updated and more modern looks. the later 54ED had a great layout and 4 SRs but no aft deck (jsut a balcony)

it's also one of the last MY with the traditional teak / veneer interior before Hatteras went with the lighter wood (personal preference)...

Actually, the 56 is the ideal motor yacht. There was a nice 54 right in the next slip to my eventual boat when we were shopping. The Ultimate Decision Maker took about 15 minutes to determine this. I have never regretted her pick after 3+ years and 8000 nm of cruising.

Yes, it's just cored above the water line... pvc foam according to Hatteras. Thanks

I came real close to buying a 52c that was sunk in the 04 hurricanes. It went down on the STLucie river which is fresh/brackish but I was concerned about the hull being cored. I did some resarch and determined it was balsa. I wonder what and when Hatt used different coring materials and if anyone has had problems. We all know about the decks in the older boats but what about the hulls?

interesting, what made you go for the 56 instead of the 54? aft deck is a little bigger on the 56 other wise i'm not sure if there are any benefits to havving the guest SR ahead of the ER (56) or behind (54)

personally i like the more angular look of the 54.

BEAM , I would say. The 56 is 18'3" The 54 is the 1510 isn't it??.......Pat

I believe the 54's beam is 17'6".

No the 54 is wide beam too although I would have thought it had the same beam as the 56

I just bought a 1988 54 MY In July. The beam is in fact 17'6". I looked at 53's, both classic and ED, before I bought the 54. The main advantages of the 54 to us was a salon almost as large as the 53ED, but with wide side decks and a great aft deck. There is also an extra foot of length in the engine room so you don't have to climb over the exhaust to get to the outboard side of the engine, and the extra beam gives more working room. Showers are a little larger, and the galley is more roomy.

On the downside, you really need to have the 750 hp 8V92 or similar engines. They are good engines, but expensive to repair. The boat doesn't perform well with the 6v92's. There also isn't as much cabinetry in the salon on the 54as on the 53ED, so storage in the salon and pilot house is somewhat limited. there is tons of storage elsewhere, though, so it isn't a huge problem. Also, the high center of gravity makes the boat prone to rolling, so stabilizers are a necessity on the 54.

We are very happy with our decision to buy the 54. We looked at a lot of boats, 53' - 58' before we bought her. I would be happy to talk with you about what we found if you would like to give me a call. My cell number is 763-229-4519.

The 56' has an 18' 2" beam and was built between 1980 & 1985. Without question it is a very nice boat, if you want to get into that size.
The 54' has a 17'6" beam, was built from 1986 to 1989. A much bigger boat in side than the 53' with a lot more power, but not much increase in cruising speed. Was designed to replace the 53' but was not a success due to poor performance. If you want a 20 knot, the 54 is not going to do it. It is a great boat at 10-12 knots
The 53' has a 15'10" beam and was built between 1968 & 1988. An all time classic, a great boat
All 3 perform a lot better with stabolizers

JMGIII:

I must differ with you. It is correct that some of the 54's that were powered with 6V92's did not perform well, however, the 8V92 boats had a spec of 21 knots at 2300RPM. We achieved 20.5 knots at 2275 RPM at sea trial on my 1988 54 with the 8V92's in August. Also, the 54 did not end production in 1989. It simply moved to an ED version that continued on through 1991 or 92. Not a bad run, over-all.
