Hatteras Model
53' CONVERTIBLE (1969 - 1980)
Well a short update on my purchase of the 53. Boat is going in the water on Monday afternoon, sea trial set for Tuesday at noon. Everybody all set and ready to meet at the dock, heres the problem. Just checked the weather and NOAA is saying GALE FORCE winds, waves at 12-16 foot with snow showers!! However the boat is in the Det river a couple of miles south of lake st.clair, waves are probably not an issuse on the river but i'm sure the wind will be. Guess i cant catch a break this week.

Oh boy...
Gale force winds are significant, especially on a vessel with a lot of "sail" area such as the 53. Will the owner be on board during the trial? If so, and he is comfortable with conditions then OK. If the owner will not be on board, probably best to wait. Gale winds is not the time for an unfamilar skipper to get a feel for a new vessel.

I agree with having the owner there. I would think that he would want to be there. The waves will not be an issue on the Detroit River. You should still be able to run the boat as needed for trial. Even running the autopilot should not be an issue since there is plenty of room out there in that river. If the owner is okay with it, I would do it. Just remember to bring your parka, hat, gloves, etc. That wind will be cold.

Oh yea the owner will be there, any damages during sea trials is on his insurance. Besides i got a couple of hundred questions for him on a few items. Perfect "Hatteras day"

You also need to know that there is no water in the middle of that river from a point just outside the marina you are at and south to the belle isle bridge. You are safe on the detroit side. It is marked with bouys, but I am not sure that they are in for the season yet. Good luck with the trials Chris. My weather sources say bad things about Monday, but Tuesday afternoon and for sure wednesday are nice. Not Florida nice guys, but Michigan nice. Notice I spoke of "my weather sources". All of us up here watch that stuff like southerners read the bible.

Well just got home from the sea trials.. 3-5’ seas, 30kt wind. The boat preformed excellent! All systems were tested, electrical, electronics, water and generator. Generator fired up after about 5sec of pre-heat and ran all systems including air units and the stove. Note that the outside air temp was about 40 and water temp much less. We had turned on the block heaters about an hour or so before starting up the mains. They both started with a very quick push of the starter and after about 10 sec settled in to a smooth idle, no noticeable smoke at start, and a very little light blue smoke while at the dock. Out on the water, after the engines were warm I brought it up to about 1850 and was showing 18.1kts on the GPS. Ran it up to 2300 (or just under) and read 21kts. I did note a little black smoke, briefly as we were bringing it up to speed. Don’t know exactly what RPM it was, but it was very brief. Temps showed 175 on port and a little less than 180 on starboard. Closed the deal on the dock and send the papers in tomorrow, very excited! On a different note I would like to thank the members of this forum for the tremendous amount of knowledge you have provided on this site. When I joined a few weeks back I spent a lot of late nights reading all the old posting trying to gather all the information that I could. It seams like every question I came up with somebody had already asked it and somebody else provided the answer. Thank you again

Welcome Chris, can you post some photos of the new girl on the block?

Hey Chris,
Where is she going to be this summer? If I'm cruising by your homeport, I will keep an eye out for you.

Since I derive a bit (lot?) of visceral pleasure from discussing running at speed in less than perfect (perfect can be defined in several ways) conditions, I would think that a 53'C would be a nice comfortable ride out in Lk Huron in 3-5 footers. I was moving along nicely in 3-5's in my 43'MY one day, when a 65'C Hatt went by headed for his home port in Charlevoix and I swear he did not seem to sensing any affect from the seas at all. I was a) impressed, b) jealous.

The 53C should be a great ride! Congrats...

Congrats!

Have a great season!!

Nick

I dont have any outside pics yet, was toooooo darn cold today for any. I will get some this weekend while I sit on the boat and ponder which project to start first! As far as the ride this morning the only thing I felt was a very slight bump on the bridge in a 5' sea. The boat is going to be taken around to Bay City for the summer.

Congrats Chris ! From someone who is seriously thinking about a 53C, I'm jealous but very happy for you. Good luck with her and enjoy her!

I was fortunate enough to be aboard Chris's new 53 while it was being surveyed. It is as nice as any 2 year old Hat and has a lovely classic look. The newer Awlgrip is a perfect paint job and the varnished aframosa inside looks very rich. The brand new bridge tubing and canvas work is top drawer. You done good, Chris. Congrats.
