  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
I was wondering what's everyone thoughts on the difference in flybridge layouts. I've noticed that on the 53ed there is not seating in front of the helm where as the standard 53 there is. So is having the helm back a bit farther on the 53 a great benefit when docking? I assume Hatt did this to maximize out door space on the 53ed

I like having the helm forward, but I'm biased so................

Mine is set back and I don't have an issue docking or driving. However, I'm 6'2". The Boss loves the seating up front. That's her favorite place to sit during a cruise.

I can see how the forward seat can be a great place to relax when underway.

I like having the helm forward as you get better visibility forward and it leaves more space behind the helm. Mine has a large L shaped settee which I really like

I never dock from the FB as I want to be close to the lines at the lower helm so I don't see what benefit you have having the helm further aft on the FB

The 53 MY had the island console with seating in front because it shared the flybridge with the 53 convertible. The 53 ED superstructure and flybridge is the same one as the 1977-80 58 MY minus five feet of aft deck.

I may be reading this "pre-coffee" but if I were comparing the 53 classic and 53 ED, the fly bridge layout would not be the primary area of comparison. These boats layouts are so different primarily the 53 ED has a very large salon but a much smaller aft deck than the 53 classic MY. For many folks the decision may largely be a matter of the climate where you keep your boat and how you like to use your indoor/outdoor space.

For me I don't dock from the fly bridge anyway on my 53MY due to poor visibility, is much better from the salon station.

Yes that forward seat on the fly bridge is absolutely lovely on the rare times when I actually get to sit there!

The passengers get a "front seat" and you don't have to strain your neck all the time to turn around and look at them in conversation.

Totally concur. We don't dock from the FB because it seems much easier from the lower helm - better visibility/easier access to lines/calmer "communication" with the line handler. When guests are aboard they seem to enjoy sitting in the forward FB seats...or on the seating at the bow if it's a calm day.
