Hatteras Model
Not Currently A Hatteras Owner
Anyone seen this boat? It last sold in 9/10 for 155.

From the write up, you would think it was just too good to pass up. And althought this is the best buyers market we have ever seen with around 23 53 my/yf sold since 1/11 and from what I can tell only three over 200K, I tend to wonder about this boat. It would appear to me that you can really purchase a great boat for far less that the refit.

I am looking for a 53, MY or YF, as now seems to be the time to buy before Romney gets elected and things get turned around.

You need to think long and hard about this level of commitment.

I bought a 1978 53' YF and am into the refit for more than the purchase price. This boat ran strong with a better than average survey. I have yet to turn an hour on her as the new owner after 5 mos of bills.

Careful as a shiny ad does not tell the whole story.

OMG!!!! It needs paint. Who picked that color?

OOCH! Dont know which was worse, this one or that one a few months ago that was painted Sea Ray Brown.

Looks like a decent boat, if you can get past the hull color. Maybe she's not as bad in person. I remember seeing this one listed before and the hull color does stand out. The rest of the boat looks decent but hard to judge from the pictures alone. Price is a bit high since very few 53MY's are selling for much over 100K. If they're willing to negotiate she may be worth a look. Painting just the hull isn't that big of a deal. If you're willing to spend that much for one, I'd take a look at Jace. It's listed here and looks to be a nice freshwater 53MY. The condition and year will add value. The mid '80s boats had better systems.

Hi All,

This boat was offered for sale/auction by MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME ACADEMY. It had been donated to them after the owner passed. See this link:

https://www.st.nmfs.noaa.gov/pls/webpls/cgv_pkg.vessel_id_list?vessel_id_in=583779

I remember looking into this boat and if memory serves me (which it sometimes doesn't) it was what I called a "solid" boat in that it was in sound shape but everything needed updating ie electronics to galley equipment. I believe it also came "stripped not equipped" as they say ie no tender etc

I'll see if I can find any correspondence I had on her.

If that's the case then selling it could prove to be difficult. Typically there is a 3 year charter agreement on these boats. The buyer pays a percentage up front and then charters the vessel from the organization for a minimum of 3 years. At the end of the charter a final payment is due and then the boat becomes yours. Makes financing impossible and insurance options very limited.

Hi All,

Jack,

You're absolutely correct, and that's one of the considerations that deterred me as I remember.

Also I seem to remember the broker facilitating the transaction telling me in 2010 that the boat could be bought for less than its currently listed for.

Amen was sold to the buyer from the Academy, not chartered. It was the Academy that held on to it for 3 years, because it was donated to them, they could not sell it until after that time otherwise would suffer tax consequences.
Amen showed very well. I was negotiating with the broker and Director at the Academy, I put in an offer of $100k the day after they had accepted the offer with the trade in. They told me my offer was better a d would have been accepted if it wasn't already under contract.

Now almost 2 years later, my current offer would be less.

That is a GREAT Colour, better to be seen in the usual Block Island fog!

Certain "larger" vessels would be less likely to hit it.

By that rationale, one ought to paint it yellow. Or International Orange.

This is one of the most cluttered boats I have ever seen. Take everything off it and it will be a few knots faster, I shouldn't wonder.

God, that green is awful!!!!

Well, the Block Island Ferry is more likely to see it in the usual fog.....as well as "other large vessels". <gg>

Hi All,

It looks a little bit better in person....really.....wouldn't you agree Ben ?

Certainly not for me but it has always reminded me of something you'd see in Miami ?

Yes Gene, I agree. Although it is not the traditional and classic Hatteras white, it is actually classy and appealing (to me) in person.

I think the hull color wouldn't look as bad if they got rid of the blue feature stripe. Too much variation and contrast between the 3 colors.

Good point. You could also pull a bag over your head, and have someone help you on board, and then when you were running the boat, you couldn't see the hull color....that would work.

I agree.. Also, I would de-clutter the salon by removing some of the funiture and stuff.. would make a good liveaboard.
