  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
52' CONVERTIBLE (1983 - 1990)
Hi everyone, we are back at it again. Since Hurricane Harvey has forcefully inspired us to this refit. The boat is currently seaworthy but having to deal with mainly cosmetic issues. My wife and I were looking over the fiberglass repair work today and going over the things we have been wanting to upgrade and change. Our discussion brought on many questions that we wanted to bounce off you all since many of you have dealt with these things. I have looked at previous posts but many are dated and curious if any new items or suggestions may arise.Exterior: the fiberglass trim around the gunnel on the inside near cushions, looking to remove so we can put a smooth teak cap, it seems cosmetic to fend off water and not structural, wanting to see what y’all think. Windows, has anyone tried lookout windows and your take on the upgrade and installation Interior: upgrade our lights to led and replace headliner, undercounter fridge and freezer- drawer or traditional, brand and why We are doing other projects but are there things that you could surest, things that you may have wished you had done ThanksBrooks

I’m in the middle of doing a refit on my 53my. I expect to go though the boat top to bottom Over the next few years. Check out my instagram page. Instagram/xjs69. Currently I’m working on putting in a galley.

Some pics of a 52c.

I just checked out your Instagram page. All l can say is OMG. How long from start to finish?

I hope to have it finished by October 2020.

I strongly suggest no 53 owner looks up Tools n Toys instagram.... i ve been following him for a while and the recent post or the whole galley floor being ripped to completely redo the genny room has given me ideas that i shouldnt be considering. I ve pretty much decided to do the same once i get to that area which in my case will be a head (old dinette) and third staterrrom (old galley)

Some updated pics, cockpit coming is coming along, port side damage is repaired, still have a few more fiberglass repairs to go

Ordering windows this week and finish some of the rot repair found in the cockpit and around the bow pulpit. Can anyone give an insight on recessed led lights. I have read older threads and wanted to know if anyone has any updated info that can point us in right directionThanksBrooks

I just installed 44 on a 50 ocean. I sold him the imtra tides and installed them in the existing holes he had from the incandescent ones.

I know we cut the power by 70%, heat from the imtra was considerably less than the 2 other brands tested. They are 10-40 volt too so no issue on 32 volt boats.

Pm If you need more information. I install a bunch of imtra lights because they just work right. Look good and last. Theyre true marine units and never had any fail.

I redid my overhead lights with 12v leds; can show you how I did it. Pound on my hull if my black Tahoe is there, I'm four boats down from you towards the yard entrance. The 50c with the fresh paint.

Nice to see things coming along with your boat.

Well things are moving along, all salon windows and port holes out and replaced. Project wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, they were just big and awkward. The black sealant behind the old windows is horribly messy. Glad it’s finally done, great improvement and well worth the effort. It was crazy to find the lack of sealant around windows. I do have the old windows crated and available if anyone needs them. There in great shape, we just wanted to upgrade. Brooks

What kind of windows did you put in? Lookouts? Any idea the man hours involved and ballpark cost? I have a 52c and would love to replace mine. Not sure if you did the fridge/freezer yet but we put a pair of Marvel stainless under cabinet and they are fantastic.

Missprint

We used the lookout windows, we did all of the portholes, side salon windows and rear window. I would have to go look at the invoice but I think low teens is a ballpark number. Regarding the labor, I did the portholes one day to get a feel for the process. The salon and rear window were done in a full day. The longest part was after the removal of the large windows, was the horrible tacky black glue/ mastic stuff. Really it is a minimum of a two person job due to the large cumbersome size of the windows. It gave my wife and i a run for our money. Since we are repainting we didnt secure the windows with suction cups from the inside. Honestly I didn't feel comfortable with a chance on a suction cup. We actually used small wood 1x2 batten material and screwed a tab/clamp to secure them to the bulkhead while the epoxy set. Yes there is 4 small screw holes to fill and fair a few inches away from the new windows. Compared to a high dollar window falling out or shifting before the epoxy set, scary. It was tough but well worth it. A doable DIY project.

Missprint what all are you planning to do with your Hatt. I am going to check into the Marvel under counter. Its an item on the list.

Where are you doing this work.

We’re in Rockport, doing the work in a DIY yard called Hook n Bull.

Ok I know that yard. I just left Mile 533. I am down that way all the time with work. I might drop by sometime to see your progress.

We switched vacuflush to Elegance heads. Reasonably good fit, better looking, and(so far)work well. While you are on the repaint, might want to look at Slanes ER side vents. If you don't replace the overhead cockpit lights, we ordered the LED bulbs from Sam's and they are a huge improvement.

I called about the ER Vents. I would like to add them, they called from sams with a contact to make them. It was a bit pricey, still considering it. I wonder how well the improvement is with them.

They work really well, and let a lot of air in without spray. I've seen them built, and they are quite a good design.
