Good Morning All:
I hope everyone is enjoying their summer and that any problems are minor ones!
Hey, I'm looking for some advice from anyone who has ever changed the fuel fill line to the aft tank on a 52 Convertible.
I've waited most of the summer to fill-up, while watching diesel prices come down. Finally yesterday, I pulled the trigger and filled my 52 up to the brim. After filling, I noticed a very strong smell of diesel, all day around the engine room door and was concerned that I may have leaked something into the bilge from somewhere. I couldn't find a trace of leaked diesel anywhere, but the smell persisted. After moving some stuff around, I was able to climb in behind the generator and get a look at the fuel fill line, which turns out to be in horrible shape. Had I seen it first, I probably would have been hesitant to push fuel through it. Moreover, the pump where I got fuel was not a high speed pump, so we were fueling for over an hour! That means fuel was sitting in that long horizontal run of ugly hose for some time. I'm assuming that's where my smell is coming from.
Does anyone have any experience with changing this line? It couldn't be in a more difficult location and I'm sure I'll have to cut an access panel somewhere. Problem is that it runs horizontally behind the big bank of battery disconnects and fuses. Maybe if I can access it at each end, I can do something.
Anyway any advice would be appreciated. Also, if someone thinks this diesel smell may be coming from something else, based on my experience at the pump, I'd love to hear it.
As always, thanks for taking the time. I always value the information I get on these pages.
Regards,
Vince
