  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
41' DOUBLE CABIN (1962 - 1965)
There is an ad for an early 50' Hatteras MY on Ebay today, with some strange repairs to the bottom.

does anybody know this boat, and if so, is it any good?

Dont know this specific boat, but a cored bottom was #1 on my list of "boats to avoid". Just complicates an already problem prone area (blistering, thru-hulls, etc).

These are 1960's boats with solid, overbuilt hulls. You won't find coring in a 50MY.

I got this reply from the seller, responding to my questions.

How many hours on the engines and generator?

When where the engines last overhauled?

"Generator is under 50 since new. The engines do not have hour meters but have been serviced religiously and inspected last summer. Both run as designed with no signs of wear."

No details on when or if they have been overhauled. Just that they have been "religiously serviced and inspected last summer."

If I'm not mistaken, West Chester PA is not on the water. My guess is that this boat is perhaps on the Chesapeake.

If it's close to Annapolis and anyone wants it looked at, subject to my work schedule I'll take a look at her.

But they're green.

I've never seen green Detroit's in a Hatteras. Checked the brochure archive and it's shows white. Wonder if it was repowered with truck engines.

Our 1975 43DC had green 671's. It seems that anything Covington marinized was painted white but these were J&T's.

This is my boat. The boat had a dedicated captain and additional mechanics that services her regularly. The previous owners took a no expense spared approach to mechanical repairs, so it shows well for a vintage boat. There is no blistering not problem with the hull. My wife and I are sad to see her go but it's not a fit for us this year. I'm happy to answer any questions members may have and am open to any information I may not have listed correctly in the eBay ad.

Not trying to pick as she looks like a nice boat, but can you expand on the hull repair? These boats do not have cored hulls.

Doing a hull peel on our 1968 50' MY, Akeeva. Also having a larger fiberglass swim platform
fabricated, to install with fiberglass support brackets, all tabbed and glassed to hull. No more bolts
into the transom. Should be great with staples, pop-up cleats, etc.

We had always assumed the hull was solid glass. As our yard got into the work, we discovered that
the transom is cored with some kind of foam, and that it was very wet below the water line. So we cutout the outer skin and removed the wet coring. We will replace it with coosa board.

Don't have a clue if Akeeva is typical of the 50' MY run or not. But don't think the transom was
touched by POs.

The transom is cored. The glass is so thick I wouldnt worry about core rot. Hatt did not seal around the stern runninglight when they cut into the coring to mount it. Pretty sute thats where the water came from that rotted mine. Unless your cutting a walk through door i wouldnt worry about it. Take some pics if you do the job.

I believe most if not all Hatts are cored in the transom. The hulls I'm not certain of but I do believe only a few were cored below the water line. Most are solid glass bottoms and most of the late '80's and up boats have cored hull sides. I think the 46HP was the first to get cored hull sides but still has a solid bottom.

If the photos are current and accurate. Somebody needs to jump on this. It looks like it might be a nice old 50.

And Davidcoughlin...you should have posted her here first. Where is the boat located in case someone needs to see it. Are the photos current? She looks like a nice old 50 at a fair price.

Hi All,

I can attest to the fact that our hull sides and transom above the water line are cored, at least my make, model and year. However, the skin on either side of the coring is substantial. Below the waterline she is solid.

A couple of years back I decided our 1976 LRC needed a "Divers Dream Plate" installed underwater on the transom centerline. I proceeded to drill two 1/2" holes in the appropriate spot on the lower transom. There was white foam coring where I drilled the holes. All nice and dry as the day installed. I cleaned out the foam about 1" all around, packed it solid with West epoxy, redrilled the 1/2" holes and completed the job. Since the transom is exposed on the inside you are able to see there is more foam coring. The areas where the swim platform bracket bolts come through the transom, the main engines exhaust, and the generator exhaust are isolated with no coring.

Second, probably 20 years ago a friend had a 50 Hatteras MY and was slowly taking on water. I helped him locate the leak under the starboard bunk in the master stateroom, where a through hull fitting had been mounted. There was definitely thick foam coring at this spot, installed as the hull was laid up. He had the area dug out, filled with more solid glass, and all was well. But Hatteras has definitely used foam coring on the hull bottom in this one case.

In 15 years on our LRC I have only found foam on the transom as described. None on the bottom or hull sides.

I've drilled holes all over my boat and there is no coring in the hull except the transom.
