  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
Not Currently A Hatteras Owner
This boat has dropped dramatically in price over the last two months. I traded a few emails with the owner and she had a new pair of 892 DDECs put in about six years ago. Anybody seen this boat? Seems like a steal...

If it's the one that needs a galley and salon I would bet it was a 04 hurricane sinker. Still if the engines and mechanicals have been gone over could be a deal. 48 has a bad rep for the stringer problems with the early ones

The stringer issue was only for the first few '87 model year boats. My understanding is those were taken back to Hatteras and properly repaired. Dave has first hand knowledge and experience with this. The 48 is a great boat. Very big for 48 with a nice layout and ER. Very heavy and thirsty but you'll get the ride of a much bigger boat. I'd say it's definitely worth looking into this one. If she sank 10 years ago and all critical systems were addressed she may be a deal. If the interior is gutted and the systems aren't up to standards then she won't be a deal for someone who wants her in yacht condition. Only way to find out is to get some more details and go take a look. Keep in mind that 125K might get you a decent one so 60k plus refit may not be a bargain if it needs any significant work

Are DDECs as reliable as non-electronic Detroits? I do not know much about them. Someone emailed me asking about this a while back and I wasn't able to tell them anything.

Electronics are never as reliable as mechanical. That said the DDEC does many things you can't do with mechanical engines. MTU used the DDEC system on all of their electronic engines. The DDEC system has been around for a long time before the others came out with a system.

With mechanicals if (when!) something breaks you can often fix it yourself, especially if you have the engine manuals. [The engine manual has a section labeled "Transmission" but it's blank. Don't ask how I learned this. Carry a separate transmission manual.] The DDECs have a whole secondary electronic back up system but if lightning takes out both systems you are SOL. Since we mostly cruise in the Florida/Bahamas areas where huge thunderstorms are a constant I went with mechanical. I have been at the dock with DDEC boats waiting for new electronic units to be delivered.

I have heard that to perform DDEC diagnostics you must have internet service or a special computer. As internet becomes increasingly common this gets easier.

Why no pictures of interior?

Salon and galley were reported to be damaged from s galley fire. Owner claims its smoke damage only and all wood is fine

I agree Jack its worth a look at 60 grand

Here is another 48C for sale in the Vero Beach area. No engine details other than 8V92's. Looks pretty clean for the price. Anyone know anything about this one?

Definitely worth a look. Sounds like a decent boat. May have a rear main seal as the oil in the trans was black. Here's a link with more pics and info.

this one may be ready to go as she's been on the market for a while but at a higher price. Electronics are old and engine hours are getting up there but looks like some other decent stuff has been done. I'd question the 5 hours on a 2005 genset. Wonder if she's been sitting on the hard for a long time.

A friend of mine owns the Vero Beach boat. He's in his 90's. Had the boat for a long time. I'll bet it dosent have more than a few hundered hours on it. Problem is it's hasent been used for years.

Just a warning. Be cautious of pop yachts.

Made me suspicious when I saw they were the broker. Good to hear that Scott/rsmith knows the owner and boat. I'd say it's worth a look and further investigation.

If I did not have the 46 I would have been the car yeaterday.

Your boat would be easy to sell given the way you take care of it. I think you and Linda should go to the East coast for the weekend.

The boats been in the same slip all it's life at what used to be RioMar CC now called Quail Valley. It's an ultra big bux club. For years Dave's routine is to go to the club everyday for lunch, turn on the AC on the boat have lunch at the club then go back to the boat for his cocktail. Other than once a year trip to crackerboys that's about the extent of it. I'm surprised the price drop because I had a beer with one of his sons a couple months ago and they were asking I think in the 170 range.

It won't be around long at that price. The great deals are getting hard to find.
