Can anyone tell me how to check at the engine if the sensor is working on my tach. It has a mechanical tach that is driven off the motor and I'm told the sensor is the small round disk type thing with two wires coming off it. Is it still available for purchase if bad. The mechanic that rebuilt the engine said it was working at the engine and that I must have a wire loose under the dash. Check the gage connections under the dash and nothing appears to be missing or disconnected. Unit was working before engine rebuilt but mechanic would not take responsibility. That's a whole new story. Too long to tell. If anyone would like his name in Marathon give me a PM.
Thanks,

The 4-53 usually runs the tach off the power take off at the rear of the engine with a speedometer cable. This runs to a Glendening synchronizer which in turn drives a little generator which runs a wire to your tachs.
So I guess you make sure the little generator (about 5 inches long and an inch around oin the Glendenning) is attached to the tach wire. Also that the speedo cable is properly connected to the engine.
Good luck.

Thanks Dasthal,,
I found that the small square like key has been broken between the sensor and the engine. But also for your info if you did not know, a mechanic told me how to check it with the volt meter. Just set it on ac volt and touch both leads on the sensor wires and you should get a small reading about 1 to 2 volts. Checked the port engine and that's what I got. Checked starboard engine and got nothing. That's when I took it apart and found the reason. Thanks for you help.

The Detroit diesel guy told me the other day that the sensor was not a Detroit part. I think he said it was a Warner part. Can anyone tell me where I can get a new sensor. It appears it is locked up and will not turn and that is why the lower key twisted and broke. It looks like the whole unit has been bent.
Thanks,
