Hatteras Model
41' CONVERTBLE-Series I (1964 - 1971)
Cause I don't have enough projects around the house and at work, I've decided to turn my 1964 41C into a express. I demo'd most of the lower berth area yesterday( I'd already changed the old layout so I knew how it was put togeter) the galley is out, the head and both staterooms. all that is left is the walls. My question is do I need to brace the fore deck at this stage? the main house is still on for the winter(frozen New england) I'll be shrink wraping it next weekend. I am concerned about walking on the foredeck to build the shrink framing. Looking at he deck construction, I don't think it's a issue(way over built) but I'd raher not have a problem.
Thanks

I think you will be fine and now is the time to find out. Have some guys stand up there and measure inside see if and how much it flexes. Dont know your new layout but you probally can gain some strenght back even if they are half walls.

Thanks Dan. I'll probably throw a few 2x's up just as a saftey net. Bout 1/2 way thru yesterdays fun and festivities Iwas asking just what the f**k I was thinking when I dreamed up this little project, but when it's done I should be a happy camper, then the repower, whooooo baby.
Let me know about the fish box molds

Tim,

I'd be more than happy to jump up and down on the forward deck for you. You know its OK if it could stand up to that!

save doors and door handles, cant get the handles anymore and there are members who need them.

best bet is to brace the deck before removing the walls. what you want to preserve is the natural shape NOW so that when it splashes again it will be where it wants to/should be. you don't want it to shrug its shoulders during the storage and change the way she sits in the water based upon new bulkheads.

regardless, without walls she has no deck support except for the natural curve, but there is plenty of strength to support many men. it will feel spongey, though.

i'm doing a very similar project with a 34c right now. i'm planning a take-off on the 36 Rybo express.

Doors, , galley drawers are up for grabs.
I'll get it braced before the rest of the walls come down.

Doug I'm not sure you'd have to jump up to test it, just down :D

After spending 4 days at the boat show, and living on all the express's they had, this boat had proably the best use of space and alot of really good enginering
Try not to laugh at the brand

Boat builders in Jersey

Here's the update from the 31 bert page that I spend a little time on. Easier to cut and paste than do the thing over. The tubb is what they call my 41.
Heading to Jersey for turkey day, Toms River area. Going to meet Oldhatt45 and see all the updates he's done since last I looked at his boat(lifting rails, shaft shrouds ect) to see what I can incorperate. Any of you hatt guys in that area, and don't have anything going on for fri/sat drop me a note. My plan is to crawl around marinas and boats(rather than hanging out with Kathi's family, heck I'd rather take the dog for a bath than do that)

Anyone buddies with guys at the factorys down there? Looking for some seconds stuff to go in the new improved, tubb express. specifically a island forward berth and seating(wrap around couch kinda things) for the helm bridge area as well as tackle centers. I can build all that stuff, but like UV says, time-patience or money. I don't have patience, and I'll be running out of time.

Tubb update. flybridge is off, figured that thing was 1000-1200 lbs took 6 of us to get it off the flatbed. all the fancy beadboard headliner Mike and I spent hours and hours installing is out. Roughly 14'x 30' of 3/4" pine thats gotta be a couple hundred lbs. all the walls, head, galley and staterooms are out. Freakin fridge was 120+ lbs(as CMP will attest to, as I made him help dump it over the side) Figure so far the Jenney Craig diet the tubb is on has helped lose way over 2500lbs and thats just the start. the salon roof will be cut off(6-700lbs). the salon floors are being replaced(old one is probably another 5-600 lbs judging from the weight of the hatches) and the cockpit deck will be replaced, thats 100sqf of 7/8 ply with 4 heavy layups of glass on it(I know that cause Cappy helped with that project). By the time it's all out and replaced with modern material I figure the weight loss wil be at least 4500lbs and probably closer to 5000.
In theory the tubb should be able to almost touch 16knts(heading down the back of a 30' roller with a tail wind) with the weight savings, aero drag reduction, and the tweaking to the motors, unless of course I let Terry F and Big doug on then all the work will be for naught and I'll be at displacement speeds again.

Hey Thudd ..... what's in it now for power .... the normal 8v53s or are you one of the 903 boats ?
Taking the weight down will definitely speed her up.
What is your plan for power ... the old iron or are you really going for the gusto ?

BTW ... have a happy Tday !! ..... hope to see ya in a few !

Same to you.
653's. before I added all the crap I was 16-cruise 18 pins. then after all the stuff it was 14-15. Now I'm hoping with the lifting rails, shafts shrouds, diet and the big injectors/tweaking(shorting the motor life) I'll be closer to 18knts. Try to be happy with that for a couple of seasons, then somewhere in the 350hp motor transplant.

My plan is to shoot down next fri and hook up sat, if thats ok
