  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' YACHT FISHERMAN (1970 - 1981)
My 1977 58yf has two 40dcv to 14 dcv converters inside the salon helm. One has a label that reads "sounder" where do the 14 volts output go. One seem to go up to the flying bridge and the other goes to the port engine room. Any one has these converters? Or are they particular to my boat. Any help will be appreciated.

They are used to power 12 volt electronics. Locations vary and many have been moved over the years

Your 58 probably had two of the converters from the factory - one at each helm position. Originally, On our 1980 53MY, they only powered the engine gauges and gauge lights. However, through the years many people have replaced some of the 32V components (sounders, radar, autopilot, whatever, with 12V components so there may be more of those converters than were originally on the boat. The fact that one of your converter says "sounder" indicates that it was added later when the depth finder on the boat was converted from the original 32v Datamarine to whatever is there now.

Thanks for the help. The boat has been in the family since 1978' it was my fathers boat, and he upgraded the electronics at least 2 times. Right now it has a separate 12v system since we changed the generators to 12v systems. I am repairing the converter in order to split the 12v sources. By the way we just finished painting the hull with allgrip san mateo wheat. I will try to post some pictures when i figure how to do it. Thanks again

I have been reading many of the older threads and have learned much, but we had a 32V-12V converter go out this last week. Smell of smoke on board is not my idea of fun. Anyway we lost our bridge gps due to the problem. Looking at a new converter and saw the old discussion about needing to go to something larger than the 32V since the charging system can burn our the lower voltage setups. (Seems that is what happened to us).

Anyone tried installation of a 12V battery in the gen room with a charger? All it would take is running new wire up to the 12V systems and you would not need the converter at close to a $1000 seems like a reasonable move? We have also noticed a smell of electrical heat in the pilot house, and think the converter there has had the same problem, seems like we could do away with both the converters and just use the 12V battery.

Appreciate any thought on this.

I just set up a bridge 12v battery system along with some other 12V stuff on a 53. all is charged by the new battery chargers so no generator no charge, Other than that its fine and only cost about $4k.

you can buy convertors online for 100.00, we have a couple and they work great. you can also put a 12 volt batt and charger and it works great but on long days running you will have to run the genny to keep up wit the discharge.
