34C Solid running project boat - Huge Price Drop! $15,900 OBO

My husband Eric wrote the following description in the boats.com ad. This is a great deal for the right person! Photos are available on www.boats.com. :D

Vessel "Sharon Jean" is located in Old Saybrook, CT

My wife and I purchased this boat in October of 2000. My intention was to spend the next several years gradually restoring this classic Hatteras. Any items that had to do with safety and reliability were first on the list of projects. Below is an extensive list of projects that have been completed to date.

Everything was going according to plan, until the local and federal governments began requiring that Ethanol be added to all the gasoline sold in the state. Last year I discovered that the factory fiberglass fuel tanks had been damaged by the ethanol. At this point, the rear decks need to be removed to allow replacement of the damaged fuel tanks with new aluminum tanks.

Once I became aware of what needs to be done to continue restoring this fine boat, I lost interest in the project. I was enjoying the work I have completed to date, however the task of replacing the fuel tanks is simply more than I am willing to undertake.

The early Hatteras 34's were built like floating tanks. The Hatteras 34 Convertible has long been recognized as one of the most seaworthy boats in it's class. The bottom of the hull is close to a full 1" thick of solid fiberglass! New boats simply can't compare to the classic Hatteras with it's solid construction and timeless lines.

Even though the restoration process of this boat is not complete, it is still an excellent platform for someone's dream project.

The cabin windows were just replaced with complete new anodized aluminum frames and tempered glass. An aluminum half tower and 3-sided bridge enclosure were also recently added. The cost of the windows, half tower, and enclosure came to almost $14,000.00. I'm taking a huge loss by selling this boat, but my heart just isn't in it any longer.

Powered by twin FWC Chrysler 440’s that generate 330 HP each she cruises at 17 Knots. The interior layout consists of a forward V Berth, down galley located on the starboard side with the head located opposite the galley on the port side. The cabin helm is located mid ships on the starboard side.

COMMENTS:

The purchaser of this Classic Vessel should be interested in continuing the restoration work which has been accomplished to date. Mechanically and structurally she is very sound and has been in use during the restoration period. Even though the fuel system has been damaged by the ethanol enhanced fuel, there are no leaks and both engines can be run. This boat is priced to sell. No reasonable offer will be refused.

it would be a help to the rest of us if who ever buys this boat and has tanks pulled that if they can get with boat us and have the tank tested and find out exactly what happened.

by the way your price is a steal even with the bad tanks.

You're not the only 34c owner with this fuel tank mess! I just ordered new fuel tanks for myself and a friend with a 38c. What gets me is,I repowered 2 years ago with gas engines. I wanted to go with diesels but diden't want to cut open the deck to change the exhaust. I'll be cutting up the deck in another week right after I get the upper end of my sta. engine going again.
One thing I did want to mention, I am hearing that the only tanks that wil work with ethonal is plastic. Moeller Fuel tanks makes the ones to replace with.
Good luck, and if you still want to boat, the only way to go is in a old Hatt.
