  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
34' SPORT CRUISER (1961 - 1965)
I am getting into the depths of a major refit of my 1964 34. I am pulling the "Sea Monsters" and considering repowering with diesel. Quotes for new Yanmars, Volvo's, etc. all run upwards of $60-75K. Purchasing new diesels is not in the budget... and doesn't make much economic sense. What would be a good unit to repower with that has been rebuilt?

Use the search feature and put in "blown motor" and you should find a thread with that name from Dec 2005. It suggests Cummins factory reman 330B series. Back then you could get them for $16K each. They are a great match for the 34C and the series 1 36C. I have had mine for almost 2 years - very pleased. Quite a few others on the forum have re-powered with B series Cummins also with good results. If you decide to go that way, lots of help/experience on this site WRT re-power. Do it if you can and plan to keep the boat. Good luck, Bob K

If you want to stay gas and dont fear the tank issues the crusader marinizations cant be beat. They are tough motors and run less than diesels. your transmissions could be reused too if they match up and are the right ratio. Get them gone over by a good transmission shop and you should be able to get 20 more years on them.

I second the Cummins B series. The 330hp versions are $16k each with a 2yr/2k hr warranty. That's strong. If you need more speed, for $17k each you can buy 370hp version. WOW! If you can live without the speed, how's this: Cummins 220B are only $11k, yes ELEVEN THOUSAND dollars with new guages and all. So now those $60-70k quotes are cut in HALF with these Cummins. Incredible. These are the best deal in turbodiesel repower history. Just about double the value and desirability of your boat too!

I just dropped in a pair of 250hp Cummins B-series in my 31' Ocean Master Center Console this past weekend. I aligned them today and got the shifters, throttles, etc hooked up. A few more parts needed will be here Thursday, make a few more connections and I should be back on the water for the weekend!

CUMMINS POWER!!!!! :D

I'll also cast my vote for the Cummins B series factory re-mans. I don't beleive the $$ quoted above include the gears. These are essentially brand new motors that Cummins made a small change on to get around some emmissions issues thus allowing them to sell them as re-mans. A friend of mine with a 33 Bert just got a set of the 315/330b's with brand new gears for $18.8K a piece.

Also, I don't think you could use your old transmissions on the new 8.1 Crusaders as they are all standard rotation engines with the LH/RH being done at the gear.

Thats some good deals on diesels. Would anyone consider the 370 HP for a 41C or something of that size? Not that I am considering it but the price seems great.

Most series 1 41s had 8v53s and they are approx 285hp, so I would think 370 would move it decently and has GOTTA weigh less than those 8v53s.

theres a pair of low hour 300 b's in Ri, listd in boats and harbors, out of a 34. 20k. If you want the 34 it's another 10k. Probably get th package for 25

The 41 has the 8v53's and they are heavy but the 370 HP 330B may not have th eraw torque to make the boat happy nor last if they are pushed? Thats why I am asking as the 8V53' may only have another 15 years on them without a major.
Anyone have the 330's work well in the 41's?

Scott,

I am not sure of the torque output of the 283hp 8V53's but FYI the 370B's put out about 125lbs-ft of torque per hole, for about 750 total per side. HP is just over 60hp/hole. I have the same engines as the 370B's in a 4cyl-250hp version and they are bulletproof little motors, albeit not terribly well balanced. The sixes are way smoother though. You would be very pleased with a pair of those monsters. The bird could easily join you in the engine room with all the extra space that you would free up.

The problem is even though it is an amazing price, it is still a nice chunk of change. Many have mentioned before that repowers are usually not cost-effective unless you are keeping the boat pretty much forever. Sure is fun to think about though!

I also say the Cummins 330b in a 34' Full enclosure full of water, Fuel you get 28 kts cruise is 22-24 kts and does not burn more then 17 gals @ hr total.
Smooth quite with a centek 6" muffler they just squeeze into a 34'.
The pair in that 34' have been for sale for a while so you could get a deal but just have them checked out by a Cummins Marine Mechanic. I went used and it has turn out good so far. I did Motors with 1400 hr new transmissions, new shafts, dripless, fiberglass exhaust, pan heaters, S&M air filters,4 blade prop that I bought from Kathy L and depicted 1" and cleaned and painted everything. Total was $32,000 sold old motors, trannys and running gear $5,000 total investment $28,000 Granted I did all the labor if not add minimum $ 10-12,000.

Scott there is a 41' on L.I that has the 370B and they say it flys have heard they even go well with 330B but for the little increase I would go for the 370 unless there was a good deal on the 330.

Also with all these price quotes I heard that as of Jan 1 there was going to be a price increase on all reman's but I have not confirmed this!!!

Sounds like it would be an option if I needed to re power. I have 2 solid motors and cant financially justify the repower. Maybe I can sell the boat and get one already done but for now the old 8V53's run on. and on and on.

would a pair of Cat 3116s (350hp) with 1.5-1 ZF trannies be of any interest ?

Regarding Cummins 370s in an older 41 boat....Slane's techs are finishing up doing exactly this in an older 41C in Morehead City. They have enough torque and power for this hull, and the change from 8v53s makes the boat at least a ton lighter- literally. The Cummins weigh about 1500 with gear, the Detroits weigh about 3400 with gear. Maybe two tons....

The Cummins B engines are a good fit in the 34C hull as well, which is not too different from the 36C. With the current reman program and at the prices, they are the best deal around. You can't go through and freshen up a set of used motors for what the remans cost. If you can get a set of used ones which are in good shape and don't need anything except installation, that would work as well.

You will a need minimum of 1 3/4" shafts with a 370B. I installed new cummins 370Bs on my 36B (29,000 lbs) and am very satisfied. Sounds like 330s may be a good match for your weight.
