Looks like my old charger is giving up the ghost. I read the 32v charger thread on here and i'm now looking at analytics models. I see they make 17 amp and 32 amp units. While price isn't a huge factor the 17 amp is about $400+ less.

My boat is kept in a slip so we are are always on dock power. We don't have an inverter and use one of our gennys (8 or 20kw) when out fishing. Alternators kick out plenty of juice as well when underway.

I'm not seeing the need for the "faster charge" when it seems i actually need more of a battery tender? Am I missing something here??

17 Amps may be a bit low. At the dock, all your DC loads are powered by the charger. If all your lights are LEds, and you have efficient heads and water pump you should be ok. But if you are still using incandescent or halogens, and galley maid heads and water pump you may need a bigger charger

Again, me being the electrical genious... Though I’ve shifted to LED, there was a time prior to that. I also have GM heads. Typically if not going out, I turn off my 30 amp charger when I arrive onboard on Thursdays and turn it back on before leaving on Sundays. Been giving the batts a rest that way for better than five years. So that’s three full days on the house bank. I’ve never had an issue coming up short. I wouldn’t have a problem with the lower amps. Maybe if I ran offshore a lot, the extra juice might be a safety factor. Just my opinion.

What’s a good source for the Analytic chargers?

Do you have a condition monitor to make sure you don't go below 50% SOC?
Sure do. If the head pumps don't pump poop, I know I'm in deep doo doo. Never had that problem. However, I will be in uncharted territory Tuesday prepping for a colonoscopy--sort of a house bank stress test. Should I hook up a FloScan?

Bought my charger from Galco Industrial Electronics. They sell the full line of Analytic Systems products and will also do special orders.

Also the manufacturer's tech support is outstanding. Needed to know certain specifics as I intended on using AGM batteries with the charger and wound up communicating several times with their chief engineer. Couldn't have been more helpful.

Lastly, I did score a 32 volt to 12 volt Analytic Systems charger brand new in the box on Ebay for like $250.00. Purchased new by Chip Ganassi Racing. Have no clue why they would have something like that but whatever. I'm always on Ebay looking for 32 volt stuff.

10 % of battery capacity is a good minimum

If you have 300 ah of battery you need a 30 amp or larger charger.

As opposed to a FloScan for your colonoscopy prep, I recommend measuring exhaust gas temperature.
