Hatteras Model
43' MOTOR YACHT (1984 - 1987)
The Admiral and I have started our search for our retirement cruiser to do East coast, Bahamas, etc over the next 10 yrs. We've narrowed our list down to Hatteras 40-43 DC or MY (we quickly concluded the Taiwan Tubs and Cats weren't for us). One otherwise interesting listing (43MY) shows 220 VAC house power. I suppose the efficiency running the AC is nice, but no way do I want to spend the rest of my life dealing with oddball appliance replacement, shore power issues, etc. Apparently somebody thought this was a good idea, but what should I think? Thanks in advance for any input.

Many of our boats have 125/250 power available. It's what is installed and how that determines what uses either power.

Simply put most older vessels were wired with 2 seperate 125 volt services . Usually one for house and one for air conditioning.

Either way you will probably be working with 2 125 volt circuits and maybe some 250 volt items that draw off both.

A good broker and surveyor can guide you.

Thanks. I've read about the 2 circuit setup, which makes sense. Most listed boats show 110 VAC house, so I was surprised to see this one say 220. We'll see what the broker has to say.

Most likely for the stove.

Stove, oven, hot water heater and air conditioning can be 220. The original idea for 110 services is 220 was not always available. Also early boats did not always have things like air conditioning.

You're right, my hot water is also 220, I forgot about that one. Didn't know that air could also be 220.
