Well, we are back looking at the 2001- 2003 Hatteras 63 RP's again. Not many negatives that I could see. The only comments found on the net are a about high center of gravity affecting windy rough water handling which was rebutted by a captain with experience. The other comment mentioned burying the swim platform.(I assume in a following sea) Very few comments other than the typical good reviews in magazines. Just wondering if any Hofer's could share their knowledge about the 63RP?

If I had money, I'd consider the raised pilot house. It's the only one with a layout close to what I like from hatteras (no flush-deck foolishness).

Maybe in 10 years.

I love a RP but have never been on a 63RP. Until I saw this thread, I didn't even realize they made such a critter that had a true RP like that one. Still more of a traditional RP lover like the 61 Tolly, but that one would certainly do. :)

I really like Tolly design. The 63 RP exterior is similar to a convertible for upkeep with a large standup ER which is #1 on the list and no teak.

I think there was a really nice fresh-water one on yachtworld.

That must be the one in Michigan. Looks super clean. When do they thaw out up there?

I don't know, but you should buy it...then sell it to me in ~10 years. Oh, and use it in fresh water only. Super, thanks!

One of my very favorite post-2000 Hatt MY models! IMHO the 63 has a better layout than the later 64'.

We like it better too. Very open salon, galley, and pilothouse. I don't like a pilothouse helm where there is no visibility aft. The only negatives are I would prefer C18's over 3412's and only one pilothouse door. I have not seen one with the C18's. Kind of odd they put the flybridge helm to port instead of centerline? None of those are a deal breaker. ER is fantastic! The draft for that big gal is 4'11" which is a major spec for us, don't want to go over 5', which can be hard to find when looking at 60+. Not sure if the keel protects props either?

No significant keel protection for props.

As much as the C18s will result in a much nicer engine room, I can't really imagine 6 cyl engines pushing a 63 hatt my. The c18 is a 1000 hp straight 6, right? The 3412E is one of the best marine engine ever made and this is the power you need in these boats.

The 63 is a compromise boat... they tried to squeeze a (half) raised pilot house but it takes a lot of space resulting in a ridiculously small galley, a smallish saloon and a small aft deck. It's tough doing a full pilothouse a 63 and I don't think it works.

I looked at a bunch of them before we bought our 74SD . The biggest issue I had was no place to get outside. Small front deck and the aft of the FB is about it. Small side decks, although mine is not any better but we have a real fore deck , the sportdeck, and a large area aft of the FB to get outside. Most of time when cruising we don't run a/c in the PH or salon only downstairs, not as ideal as my old boat's layout (61 CMY). We also did not like the fact the layout was so broken up, and no ventilation downstairs at all w/o A/C. I would also only buy one that is stabilized as if you want to go slow and it's snotty out you will have to throttle up or eat it........Pat

Dang, add that to the other two negatives!
Thanks
That "negative" is the only reason the draft is what it is, and the only reason it has the speed it does. As they say, you can't have everything.

I m not sure a keel big enough to protect the wheels is that critical. Actual draft is a lot more important. I moved from running a boat with a 6'4" draft to 4'10" and it made my life so much easier!!

In this case the keel extends pretty much as low as the wheels, although hard to see in the pic.

Notice how the boat doesn't have trim tabs? All it has is a SS strip extending 1/4" where the trim tabs would be. Gets on plane with just 3 degree bow rise, and i bet it burns as much as the 63/64 hatt ( 70 GPH @ 20kts on 45% engine load) ... pushing 20 extra feet!

I didn't know Carolina Skiff builds yachts. :) I would hope it planes quickly given it's practically a flat bottom boat. Seriously, what's the deadrise on that thing compared to the Hatt?

Some good comment and advice, just what I was wanting. We have only owned SF's and mostly fished. A lot to consider. I want a stand up ER with around 6' head room which eliminates most Tollycraft/Offshore style designs. We looked at a 66 Offshore at the FLIBS which had everything we wanted but had a 6' draft and needed a paint job. Seems we need to broaden our search.

Deadrise on th Lazzara is 11 degrees.i m sure the hatt cuts thru a little better but we ve done four trips to the Bahamas so far and she handles fine. Gets on plane at 1500rpm doing 18kts on 56gph... not bad for an 84 footer

You can't have it all... but we re goin to be doing about 400 hrs a year so I ll trade a little ride confort for fuel, especially in the exumas at $4+ a gallon

You ever look at the ass of your 41? Mine is flat and fat!
