  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
I am learning my way around our 1971 43' DC. Both heads are plumbed into a holding tank under the fwd cabin sole. In the center of the engine room there is an access plate with several pipe plugs in it. is this another holding tank that has been disconected?

We have an 1980 43' DCFB. In ours, the holding tank is as you described. Aft of it is a center line water tank of about 100 gals. The fwd end of this tank is on the centerline aft of the door to the fwd head. The aft end of the water tank is located on the centerline in the area just aft of the fwd engine mounts. Aft of the water tank is a third center line tank holding about 100 gals of fuel. Through other posts, I have learned that utilization of these three tanks is not necessarily standard amongst all 43' DCs. You might pull one of the plugs on the tank in question and take a look inside.

Sure sounds like the access plate w/plugs is the manifold to the aft cabin holding tank (usually). The usual 4 hoses to the manifold are 1) outlet from toilet, 2) air break/vent to over the side through hull, 3) pump out hose, and the smallest, a short pipe for detecting how full the tank is via a on/off pressue gauge.

The fresh water tank would be amidships, between the fwd and aft holding tanks.

This is the config on a '72 43' DCMY.

On my 73 dc. Foward tank is the holding tank. second tank is the water then there is one more tank aft (all in the keel) They have brass plugs in the brass plate only need about a 10 ft. wrench to get them out. In my boat I still haven't deicded what to use the aft tank for. With around 100 gallons of water around the same in the holding tank I really don't need more. I've thought If I take her to the bahamas aft tank with fuel but not sure I could get the mortage to pay for it. Bill

Thanks for the info, you are right about the difficulty removing these plugs. I plan to go back today for a second attempt, armed with PB Blaster oil and a bigger wrench/hammer. Besides using it as another fuel/waste/water tank it also could be a place to mount batteries along the centerline. Has anyone ever cut into this area ??
