Hatteras Model
52' SPORT DECK (1997 - 1998)
Hello, last summer we purchased a 1998 Hatteras 52 Sport Deck. One of the key items for us that was missing was a Davit Crane. My question to the group is on the installation. On the photo I have circled two locations, A & B. I have seen them mounted in both locations and would like opinions on what the group thinks is the best location. Especially if you have a technical reason to avoid one or the other. In case it helps, the Tender is an AB Mares 11 VSX with a 30 HP Yamaha and weighs in at around 700 lbs wet. The orientation of the tender with the Davit Crane in position A would be side to side and in B, I would like to run the dinghy in the same orientation as the boat, but length will be a issue unless I can get it right up to the curtains. My preference is position B as it takes less useable space on the aft deck.

As near as I can tell from the low res photo, You have both A and B marked in two locations. I don't understand.
I will note that davit location can dictate when and where you have launch capability. It's helpful if you have a
choice to side launch or drop it down off the stern.

Input to consider: the combination of davit fwd/aft location and boom length should allow the davit to lift and land things into the water-level sport deck (for other boats into/onto cockpit / swim platform).

Think about 8D battery swaps lifting from the dock, moving major equipment or appliances onto the boat etc. We use the crane as a convenience more than I would thought, including risk mitigation so I'm not breaking my back lifting something from the dock or into a floating tender. I'd vote for "farther aft" position personally.

I guess I don't understand why you have 2 locations for a single davit crane. There is only one mount on a post. I am buying a 43MY and need to do the same thing. I installed a low-profile davit crane on my current Uniflite in the forward port location. That only allows launching off the port side of the boat. I would like to launch off the port and starboard on my new boat, so I am going to install a pipe davit crane at the aft port location. A low-profile one won't work here because you can't get to it with the dinghy stowed. You could probably get a fancy hydraulic one that lifts and swivels remotely, but I am sure that is expensive.

It looks to me like he has an X circled, and then has written A and B next two each.

I think there are two choices being presented here, port fwd or port aft.

Here is a cropped photo of the area. Looking for technical reasons one of the two options, (A or B) should or should not be used.

It depends alot on where the standpipe is going to land on the main deck.

OK, well our preferred location is the aft port location. The stand pipe would land on the sundeck floor just behind the aft deck roof support. Any feedback on that location?

I would like to install another standpipe on the port side of the boat, so I could either swap the davit or have two so I could launch the dingy from either side. I might be over thinking this , but installing a standpipe seems like a black art to me . Not much information on standpipe installation out there .

Will the standpipe location interfere with cleats or chocks for your dock lines? Is the davit hoist and luffing hydraulic, electric or manual? If mounrted on the aft location, is there enough room to allow someone to position themself to help swing/ position the skiff coming inboard? There are lots of things to consider before drilling that 3" dia hole thru the upper deck.

On ours, some rocket scientist installed the standpipe far aft. It's right smack in the way of seating on the aft deck, but what's worse, when retrieving the dinghy and trying to swivel the crane, no matter where you attach a line to the dinghy you are essentially pulling against the standpipe. Because you can't go any further aft it is very difficult to try to swivel the davit pulling on a line by hand, almost to the point of being dangerous. Add to that the list incurred by the weight of the dinghy hanging on a lever off the side and you are now pulling up hill as well. I've had to rig up lines and even a lever clamped to the side of the davit in order to get the dinghy swung far enough to where it's off the stern and we can finish pulling it around. Of course a davit with a hydraulic swivel would eliminate that issue if you were going to spend that kind of money.

Just my 2 cents...

Thank You, very good information, thats what I was looking for.

I think someone here rigged an ATV winch to the head of the davit to pull it back against the list. Maybe not the most elegant work around but alot less investment than a power rotate davit.
