Hatteras Model
38' CONVERTIBLE-Series II (1987 - 1991)
Hi all, i'm looking at a 1988 38 convertible with 671's i absolutely love the size and layout of the boat. the interior needs some freshening and electronics need upgrades but overall in good shape.

what's the good, bad, etc i should know about this model?

what is fuel burn at cruise with 671's and what is cruise speed.

thanks, hopeful future hatteras owner

What's the hp? 671 has a range of hp ratings.

ad says 450hp according to an other person 485hp was standard

I think about 2000 what do you mean by green grenades?

Get a really good detroit guy for the engine survey. When their run hard they have shorter life between rebuilds. You could be close to need major overhauls.

Trying to find out who the Detroit guy is in long island, ny. Anything else I should be aware if on these boats

Where on long island?

Boat is in Oceanside south shore Nassau county

Scrod should have the names of a few good mechanics there.

He's in the area and has a pump and injector shop.

Pretty sure the 485HP 671TIB was standard for that boat. At 2000 hours they may be getting near the end of their service life. If cared for and run easy they may be fine. That's a big 38 with a deep keel. They run about 25kts WOT and cruise around 19-20kts, any faster and you'll be rebuilding sooner.

saltshaker, i was told cruise was about 22knts. if i go through with this I really need three seasons on the engines before I can rebuild or repower.

3 seasons is how many hours?

I'd run 200 per year if time allowed.

Some run far more.

Many run 50 or less

i'd say 150 per season or so. i usually run about 100 hours on my gas boat i just sold.

If all is in perfect condition and she's not overloaded, she will cruise 22kts but you'll be doing it at max cruise or 2250rpm. If you run them that hard it will cost you in service life. Most get 1500-2000 hrs between overhaul when run like that. You also see a lot of catastrophic failures when this are run that hard which is why Many refer to them as hand grenades. There are plenty that run well and give good service life. Problem is they are very stressed at that HP rating and unless they are kept in top running condition, small problems can cause major issues. If you need a 22-23kt cruise, expect shorter overhaul intervals. Find out how the owner runs her and confirm the hours, there may have been a major that's not reported. If they're in decent shape now and you stay on top of them, you may get your three or more seasons out of them. A good survey will tell a lot. If they do have 2000 hours on them, I would be planning for a major in the next 2-3 years. If she is tired, she should be priced accordingly. You need to do your due diligence to get an accurate assessment of the boats overall condition. Don't rely solely on the listing or broker.

I have the same boat/power set up and my cruise is 18kts@1900rpm. Absolutely love the boat!!

I was hoping you would chime in. That seems pretty good. Are yours the 485HP TIBs and is max rpm 2500?

ok, I made a mistake the motors have 1400 original hours and no major overhaul. the a/c units and generator are original as well, plumbing and waste lines have been replaced as needed.

what would you guy's put a value on this boat?

Hard to say without seeing the boat. 1400 original hours is low. That can be good and bad. If they've been cared for and survey well, the engines may be fine. Sitting unused isn't the best thing for them either so find out if she's used regularly or has been sitting unused for a long time
