  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
Any comments on a 1976 Bertram SF with 8V71 it engines with 2000 hours. Anyone know of any Bertram quirks to look for in that era of boat. Asking for a friend. Looks like a pretty good deal, lots of new stuff, electronics etc, around $75,000. Thanks in advance. John

I'm guessing it's a 46. Great boat but the ER is tight so many suffer from lack of maintenance. Mica interior on those older ones gives it a very dated feel. 75k for a good updated one is about right.

A customer had a brand new 1985 or 5 one that I ran on a few times.

Great boat for fishing. He had the big single in the master but wifey didn't like it. he ended up selling the boat and kept the wife at least for a bit.

FWIW, I thought I looked in the ER of a Bertram, when I was looking at Hatt's. The thought occurred to me that they have wood stringers, just like a Chris Craft. If true for the boat in question, I would be giving the stringers a hard look for condition.

Is stated the engine room stinks unless one of your legs is about a foot shorter than the other. The generator is mounted in the lazarette. Never saw a generator that wasn't a pile of rust. With 871 naturals it will be slow. The hulls were laser straight and quite nice. It takes a lot more power to push that deep v than it does a 46 Hat. Overall they were nice boats in their day. Just my 2 cents worth.

If it's got 8/71's they're TI engines about the same speed as 46C Hatts of the same era. Great head sea boat but slow down or run in a beam sea they snap roll like crazy. Not a great boat for drift fishing or trolling in the trough. I fished with the Famous Neville Greene who had a 46 Bert Xiphias Hunter. Many Black Marlin came thru the transom door of that boat. It's a proven fish raiser. Mr Greene would later buy a 60c Hatt which was better for layovers required on the barrier reef. The generator placement on Bertram's is a real problem. I've been on several where we flooded the cockpit backing down on a fish and drowned the generator.

Great repower candidate. My friend has a 79 46sf with qsc cummins. We fish that boat real hard
