Hatteras Model
Not Currently A Hatteras Owner
Hi guys, I'm looking at a 1968 Hatt 34 convertible, it has twin detroit 453 engines, completely original on the inside including the original 1968 fridge, it has a newer generator, cosmetically the outside looks great but the whole front of the boat needs recoring, ALL is soft. The interior is all in pretty good condition. The boat hasn't been moved since 1989, the guy that cleaned the bottom told me everything is in perfect condition. What would be a base price to offer??? The owner told me they want $38k.

For comps, a 38 with 8v53 that next to it sold for $25k 2 years ago, my dad bought a 43dc for $20k 2 years ago and I know of a 36 with cats that sold this year for $5k.

Hard to say without more details or seeing her in person but the $38K seems high based on your description. Being original is good and bad. Nice that she hasn't been molested but not so good if she hasn't seen necessary and desireable updates. The wet foredeck is a big job but one a good DIYer can tackle, but it will take a bit of time and effort. Make sure there aren't any leaks into the cabin or interior spaces. Tough to compare to other sales unless you know the specifics of each boat and sale. I'm betting the 36C that sold for 5K was either a unique deal or most likely a significant project.

453's in that boat means a slow slow boat. Loud too.

At that ask I'd look at other 34C's and maybe you'll find one that has been repowered with newer iron.

Is she in Puerto Rico? She looks sweet in the pics. IMHO she'd be worth $25K of anyone's money. Maybe more depending on condition of engines and equipment.

SeaEric, yes she's in PR, I was thinking $20k tops as a boat that has sat so long is going to need $$$ and the recore of all the floor is algo going to take amlot of money depending on what material I use.

Here are pics of the interior:

This looks like a pretty clean little boat, which makes it worth more.

Original fitments and decor aren't worth much in older boats, I think. Buying an older boat isn't like buying a vintage car where originality is really worth something. Boat values are more about usability and overall condition, and you don't get penalized for updates on older boats. If you took two 34' Hatteras convertibles, one with it's original gas engines or diesels and one that had modern high-speed diesels in her, equivalent in condition otherwise, hardly anyone would argue that the boat with its original engines would be worth more. It would, in fact, be quite the opposite.

Once in a while we've seen an older Hatteras which does have all the original decor and furniture, and I have to admit as a fan of older boats that it makes the boat more interesting to have all that stuff on board. I'm not sure I'd want to use those radios, cook with those appliances, sleep on those beds, and read with those lamps- but it is fun to see them and see a boat that looks like the brochure model did.

Now when it gets to the models with the bouffant hair etc, my interest wanes...

I would agree now that I see the rest of the pics.
