Hatteras Model
41' CONVERTBLE-Series I (1964 - 1971)
I am a bit confused on fuel capacity on my 1965 41c. In the original papers it states 300gal capacity of fuel. In a lot of ads on the internet for these vessels it states 400gals. I am still in the process of refitting the boat and it is in a boat yard. I was wondering if Hatteras under stated the capacity for some reason, or these boats with 400gals have added a tank. It would be very nice to find out if anyone know the answer. I might add a tank to increase capacity if it is 300.

Thank you

When provided with your hull # Hatt can probably answer the question as to what was existing when she left High Point. After that; who knows.

On my particular boat (not a Hatt) there was an option for additional fuel capacity, which my boat has. In the old days, many boats were at least semi custom builds. The first owner had some choices based upon their intended use.

Eric - The owner of the 1966 41c we are buying this week (I hope?) said that in "67 they went to 400 gal.

If your boat is gas, do you know of the ethanol problems of older fiberglass fuel tanks? If not do a Google.

Best of Luck,
Jeff

my 1965 41 DC has 2 150 gallon tanks...

If your tanks are original - they will not handle ethanol blend fuel. You'll either have to replace them or coat the inside. There is a great amount of information regarding the topic on this board...

I was given the same answer as Jeff was about the fuel tankage of my 1966 41'tc. It was changed from 300 to 400 in the 1967 model year. I would think the same tanks were used in the 41c but that is just a guess.
Jeff, Congratulations on choosing a 41' tc. They are a great boat and I am sure you will be very happy with it. Let us all know when you finalize the sale.

Sorry. I meant to congratulate Jeff on selecting a 41c. I guess I had 41tc on the brain.
Fred

CONGRATS on the 41C!!! Talk about a truly great boat/hull. The 41' Hatts will go down in the annals of marine history as the first of many great fiberglass boats to be put into production.

The info above is indeed correct, the fuel capacity was increased from 300 to 400gal for the 1967 model year in the 41's. My friend's 1966 41DC with 8V53's has 300 gal capacity and my 1967 41TC with 6V53's has 400 gal capacity. My significant extra range when we cruise together chaps his hide sometimes, as does his extra speed chap mine from time to time! LOL

That definately must be the answer. Thanks for all the information. The boat has 8v53's so ethanol should not be a problem. The original documentation for the boat says 300 gallons for the 1965. Looks like an extra tank might be in our future to give us a bit more range.

Thanks again and Congrats on the new classic Hatteras. You won't find another boat built as tough.

Talk to wild bill about extra tanks. he has them and has problems associated with them.

The paperwork for my '67 41c says (2) 150 gallon tanks and that's what they are. There is a 41c nearby with (2) 200 gallon tanks but I don't know the year. Interesting thread.

Greetings from sunny Arizona this morning,
The outside air temp is 27 degrees..I am in Mesa, right next to phoenix...gotta love this global warming..

I just went out and measured the tanks from my 41tc. the tanks are 7x1.5x2.33 = 24.465 cu ft x 7.481 gallons = 183 gallons per tank x2=366 gallons total.

These are fiberglass tanks coated with what appears to be a fenalic material on the inside.

I opened these tanks to clean them as I have just installed new yanmars and did not want to take a chance on contaminated fuel.
If I can figure out how to upload the photos I will do so this morning.

PS, Photos are now uploaded in technical photos. just search for Fuel Tanks.

:)

If I was going to add an extra 100 or 150 gallon tank to a 41' 1965C what would be the best way to do it. I don't want to take out the original tanks, just add an additional one. If anyone out there has done this, please let me know what you think. The fuel piping and fill is no problem, just the placement. I would think fiberglass would be the best option.

Thanks.

Convert the water tank and add new watertanks instead.

Very good idea! Anyone had any trouble with this?
