  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
65' CONV -Series I (1986 - 1998)
My port engine is idling too high; starboard is 550 RPM while port is 850. The throttle controls are hydraulic and port is the lead for the synchronizer so it has an hydraulic actuator on the engine while starboard, the slave, just has a cable from the synchronizer to the engine.
How can I adjust idle on port?
My downeaster with a single Cat is much simpler.

You really do need the manual...or google Detroit Diesel V92 V71 variable speed governor.. There are things that impact the idle speed other than the idle speed screw..the buffer screw for example. It's simple and complicated at the same time. On the aft end of the governor housing, above the throttle tension spring, there is an Allen head screw and jam nut.. Back out the buffer screw, loosen the jam nut, turn the Allen head screw to raise or lower the idle to just a tad less than where you want it. Tighten the jam nut, then screw the buffer screw back in until it barely touches the differential lever (until it just barely raises the RPM's)..

If the governor adjustment on a Series 92 is anything like the Series 71's, please read the warnings. And a "tad" means a tad--a small tad at that. I'd mark the buffer screw clearly with some paint at its 12 O'clock before backing off the jam nut. Again, if it's similar to the 71's you really need to read-up on it.

I ordered a manual.
