  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
55' CONV -Series I (1979 - 1988)
I have 12v71TI's and I just changed my racors and secondary fuel filters. Port motor fired right up, no problem. Stbd, fired, started missing and coughing and died. Lost her prime. So, how the heck do I re-prime and bleed her????????

I know this is not helpful at the moment but this is a perfect time to install electric priming pumps! :)

Now, re the problem...DDs are self priming so given enough cranking and a full fuel system, they WILL prime/ start...at least in theory. The problem is that sometimes you can deplete the batteries while you crank and crank before they actually prime/start. Obviously you have to also consider the extended starter use/possible damage to the starter if you crank for long, continuous periods without letting the starter cool.

I assume you have checked carefully to ensure there are no air leaks in the Racor/fuel lines which would cause such a failure to deliver fuel. I assume also that you filled the pertinent filters with clean diesel.

I would just re-do it all, ensuring no leaks/full of fuel and try it again. If no luck, any small pump can be temporarily inserted in the fuel line between the Racor and the engine to pressurize the system. In the past on other boats I have occasionally used small hand pumps for that purpose but any sort of pump that can handle diesel will work fine.

Frankly, one of the reasons I replaced the Racors on our boat with dual spin-on fuel filters is because of the somewhat finicky (IMO) nature of the Racor fuel filters re leaks, various parts that need replacing, etc...

Good Luck.

That is exactly at I did. Went through the whole thing, put more fuel in racors and secondary. Fired right up.

Many thanks
