The boat has a Glendinning synchronizer. Neither of the throttles "stay put" and drift to lower RPM. Detroit Diesel mechanic I had on the boat said there is not more "adjustment".
What do I need to replace?
We have a chart table on the 53. It opens up to be twice as wide as it is in its reduced position.
If anyone is interested in this chart table, let me know.
I received some really bad advice from a sailor (I should have known ) regarding how to refinish exterior wood on Da 53. Fast forward to today, handrails ahead of wing doors were all sanded down to bare wood and presently have 4 coats of Bristol finish on them. Want to put another 4...
Anyone have a left and a right? My props did some bottom love last year. Props are pulled and at the prop shop but won't know the verdict if they can be saved until next week.
I am in Michigan.
Detroit Diesel 8V71TI
When boat was launched in early April, oil on dipstick was just oil.
Brought the boat over from storage to the dock about 5 miles and did not notice any particular excess white smoke other than cold start white smoke. Have been away and not started the boat until two...
53MY 1979 mid cabin stateroom has a tank under the berth closest to the center of the boat. No access to it. Any idea what it is for? Not blackwater. Freshwater is across the transom in the aft stateroom.
Took mast home for the winter. Stripped all of the old white paint off of it. Beautiful mahogany underneath. Putting sealer, epoxy, and then varnish on top. Doing the same to pilot house doors and wing doors. Nervous that the new natural finish won't hold up properly. We are in Michigan...
Bought the boat about a year ago. Initially could not figure out why black water tanks got full so fast. After reading threads from my learned associates here I was pretty sure that after being fed brackish / salt water for decades, the brass pipes surrendered.
So, the big problem here is how...
I never liked the vinyl headliners on my 73 43DC. Reminded me of the headliner of a 1964 Impala. They were in good shape though, so they were tolerated.
My 79 53MY has the same headliners. They are not in as good condition in some areas, especially along the edges in some places.
I know...
Our 53MY has rather old and tired carpet throughout. Would love to be very proper and do teak and holly, but just plain old cherry or oak would look quite nice also.
The question is, how does one attach the new wood floor to the plywood underlayment? Don't think conventional nailing...
We bought a 79 53MY in March in Deale, MD.
The boat is solid and mechanically, all of the important stuff seemed to work.
Brought the boat back to Detroit over 14 days.
Mishaps were as follows:
New batteries were installed on port side by the previous owner this spring. Had to hang out on...
Our 53 Hatteras MY has pilothouse doors that need some love on the outside. They are presently painted white. I have seen 53's with both painted and varnished pilot house doors. I prefer the look of the varnished doors.
My question is: Has anyone ever removed the exterior white pain off...
I have always been impressed (that is not necessarily a good thing) by the high cost of flat screen chart plotters out there. Many thousands for basically a proprietary personal computer and flat screen.
I am presently looking at purchasing a personal computer with a solid state hard drive...
So, these are new to me. Previous boat had 6-71N's. The new boat has 8V71-TI's.
I have read that running the boat in displacement mode 8-10 knots is hard on the subject parts and will cause added maintenance. Urban legend?
Also, before shutting down to let the engines idle and allow the...
So, I am on my way to the east coast to check out a 53MY we put an offer on in late January. Sea trial on Thursday. Preliminary info from surveyor is positive. Present owner is correcting any minor deficiencies along the way.
All looks good, so far.
This is our second Hatteras. Why is my...
Planning on bring a 53' MY through the Erie Canal as soon as winter decides to leave and ice melts. And I am aware that the canal does not open until May 1.
The boat is in the Chesapeake Bay right now. Bringing it back to Detroit. The bridge heights on the western end of the canal look...
