On a 1965 Hatteras 41 DC (aft cabin) how much of the exhaust port should be in water? My SB port is almost half way underwater, and the Port is about 3/4 under water. How concerned should I be about this?

Last time I put the exhaust manifold I must have tightened it too much. The o rings got pinched and broke up letting water into exhaust into cylinder into oil.. what is the right way of putting together exhaust manifold without over doing it? Should I add and hi temp gasket maker to it??
