    New Tee Shirt

Any update on our ability to, once again, buy 'classic' Hatteras T-Shirts? Every site seems to forward me to the Hatteras website and their apparel section only has new shirts and mostly fishing related clothing. As the owner of a 53 Extended Deck MY, I'm especially fond of this shirt which I...

120 Volt Outlets in Engine Rooms

My 1983 53' ED has a 120 volt AC outlet in the port engine room, but none in starboard engine room or generator space. Is there any good reason not to add these? It certainly would be convenient and I could run them all from the AC panel in the port engine room (that powers the ACs).

    ITT/Jabsco Searchlight Remote wires

In removing a heavy panel, the 43670 joystick remote for my ITT/Jabsco searchlight came apart. No real damage was done but most of the thin, colored wires came off the 9 pin joystick. I've searched everywhere and I can't seem to find any reference that shows which color goes to which pin. Any...

    Freshwater Tank Outlet access

I'm more confused. The Hatteras Manuals are certainly lacking. It looks like I have 2 water tanks (Master and Guest mid Stateroom). Fill seems to go into the Master Suite tank. The Guest stateroom tank doesn't seem to change level no matter how high I fill the Master tank (over 3/4). There...

    Freshwater Tank Outlet access

Hi, 1983 53' ED MY. Looking for an air leak in my freshwater system (pump seems to pull both both water and air, causing foamy water and an unhappy FW pump). I've check all of the lines in the starboard engine room. Under the master stateroom bed there are two hatches. The starboard one has...

    What is it??

I'm cleaning up the rear of my starboard engine room on my 1983 53ED MY since the exhaust system has been removed for transmission work. In the rear of the starboard engine room there is this rusty metal hockey puck on top of a plastic fitting tlat looks to be through hull. There are no wires...

Allison Transmission Rebuild - Part 2

I had to pull my starboard M20 for a rebuild. I don't know how many of you have ever sent an Allison to Arcadian Marine Transmissions in Louisiana, so I wanted to include some pictures: They even replace the serial number plate (and include the rebuild date) Now if it works as well as it...

Water collecting on top of forward fuel tank

My 1983 53 ED MY is sitting idle, awaiting the return of a transmission from LA (another story). I've noted the accumulation of some water (appears to be fresh water) on top of the forward fuel tank. I had thought, in the past, that this was a plumbing leak but the boat has been sitting for 3...

    fuel tank guage removal

Improve Gauge Thanks. They do sell them and, while they are all plastic now, this is actually a big improvement. I think mine failed because they got some fluid in them though the tiny hole on the back of the old metal version. This caused the magnetic needle to stick, making the gauge...

    53MY transmission removal question

My Allision M20 Horror Story... As another Chesapeake Bay resident and new owner (9/15) of a 53MY I'll fill some of you in on my ongoing M20 problem. As some of you may remember, I was having problems with my Starboard gearbox. It was slow to engage, not just 1st thing after starting, but all...

    fuel tank guage removal

Magnetic Fuel Gauge repair or replace? I have a 1983 53ED MY. My forward fuel tank gauge is stuck between 1/2 and 3/4. I removed the gauge and the mechanical part is fine (it is magnetic and the cork is good). The problem is the needle (magnetic) is stuck lose inside the guage. Does...

    Broken Strainer Bolt repair??

One of the bolts on the raw water strainer cover gave way when reinstalled before launching. (See photos). Temporary fix with a heavy-duty zip tie got me home (no leakage). Any thoughts as to how to fix this short of replacing the entire strainer?

    Allison M20 issue

Amazon, of course. There was already a 'T' fitting near the transducer so it I just had to flair some copper pipe and hook up the gauge. Yes, I've left it in place as it is more accurate than the electric gauge and I can adjust the pressure screw while watching the pressure.

    Stripped raw water pump threads

I changed the water pump impellers on my 8V71's today and I noted some 'gooey' stuff as well as the normal paper gasket on both pumps. When I replaced the end covers, I realized why. Both pumps had one of the five 1/4" bolt threads stripped. (Not the bolt, but the bronze pump body threads)...

How Many 53' Hatteras were manufactured?

I'm just curious because I've heard a wide range of numbers. Does anybody know how many were made? My Hull number is 53MY704. (a 1983 Extended Deck). Does the 704 mean anything? Thanks.

    8V71TI Secondary Fuel Filter Elements

I have a 1983 53 ED with DD 8V71TI's. I'm trying to figure out all of the filters and such and even with the V-71 manuals, there are lots of variations. My fuel filters have a Racor primary and an 'non-spin-on' DD secondary (see picture). Anybody know the part number for the secondary filter...

    8V71TI winterize question

Question regarding Winterizing 8V71TIs on the hard. I'm assuming it might not be easy to remove the raw water hose from the strainer (huge hose...). I have a garden hose adapter that fits the Raw Water pumps Zinc opening. Rather than running the engine to pull 7 gallons or so of pink stuff...

    32 year old generator woes

Generator is a Kohler. It was 'advertised' as an Onan but plate says: (Kohler model 20R0P63). Pics attached. Any source for parts or advise what to look for when one 'side' puts out 120v and the other nothing (7 v). Most shops around here (Annapolis) aren't to interested in working on it...

    32 year old generator woes

As the 'new' owner of a 1983 53 ED I'm learning a lot about how to spend money. On our last overnight trip, this past weekend, our generator had some issues. I believe this is the original generator (Onan? Diesel, Kohler 20R0P63 generator). The diesel runs fine but there are two issues: 1)...

    Outback Inverter Stacking Anyone?

I have a 53 ED, 32 volt boat and I want to add an inverter(s), primarily so I can have 110v when running the boat without running the generator. I've looked at lots of old posts on this board about various configurations, pass-through, sub-panels, etc. One solution I didn't see is called...
