    Tank debris/fuel strainer

Last summer, on a 1972 53MY, in heavy seas my starboard 8V71 TI shut down due to debris obstructing the ball valve and turbine of a racor 1000. After having both tanks "cleaned" and replacing the o-rings on the fuel tank caps, i prophylactically inspected the turbine and ball valve and have...

    50 volt voltmeter

Both of my voltmeters went within months of each other. Sam’s is the only source I was able to find, but apparently there was a production error by their supplier. While the voltage reads correctly when power on, the needle doesn’t move when off. The only other 50 voltmeters I found were...

    8V71TI air intake socks

The air intake socks I have been sourcing from Deisel Pro are $28/sock and have two seams in each sock. I recently took out four replacement socks and they all separated at the seams, leaving me with 8 pieces of foam. I was able to reconnect the pieces with silicone adhesive caulk and use them...

    Racor checkball removal ?

Running in rough water I experienced engine shutdown due to sludge obstructing the checkball on my Racor 900 filter. I had the tanks cleaned (at least that’s what I thought I payed for) only to have it happen again. Both times I was able to get home by changing the filter element but the vacuum...

    Parallel AC freshwater pump

After reading a previous posting, I plan on adding a parallel AC freshwater pump. I'm thinking of accessing the input from a T connection (with a check valve) before the check valve for the input to the galleymaid pump and the output would T into the output line of the galleymaid pump. Are there...

53 my er door latch fix

The engine room latch on my 53MY fell apart and a replacement is difficult/impossible to find. I drilled a hole in the center of the post, put a cotter pin through, and then flattened the cotter pin with a C clamp. An easy solution until I find a replacement latch.

    keel water tank leak 53MY

I have replaced my transom and VIP water tanks and now have a leak in the top of the keel tank. With a camera I can see water on the top side of the tank on the starboard side near a tab to the stringer. I will attempt to cut an access to this spot but because a PO reconfigured the master bed...

53my aft deck icemaker enclosure wood?

I need to repair or remake the cabinet on the aft deck of a 1972 53MY- the one with the black formica top/sink/icemaker. Does anyone know what type of plywood was used, afromasia?? The local hardwood store says its stained? Thanks, Larry

    Voltage divider circuit??

On my 53MY, my 32 volt anchor light and white running lights are relatively dim. Ideally I would like to convert them to LEDs but haven't found 32 volt LEDS. Does anyone have a source? I stumbled across a site which described a "voltage dividing circuit" which looks like 2 resistors in series...

    Replacing 53MY trim tab

My 1972 53MY is missing the starboard recessed trim tab. The only things missing are the trim tab and the piano hinge both of which I have from Sams. I went under the boat with mask and thought I felt stubs of screws that fixed the hinge to the boat but then I felt the port side which feel like...

    Purple-black blisters

On the underside of the flybridge overhang on a 1972 53MY, which has been repainted by PO, I develop a purple- black blister, usually during the winter months. In the past, I have broken the blister, ground out the area with a dremel, and filled the void with West epoxy after a few days. This...

I have a Lofrans Tigre windlass which I am servicing. I have the outer clutch, chain gypsy, and shaft key removed, however I am unable to remove the inner cone clutch. DST-51 Automatic voltage regulator

I have a DST-51 AVR from a 1994 Northern lights 16kw with 1900 hrs on it. I was experiencing voltage fluctuations so replaced my AVR ($600) and had the same problem. Ultimately found faulty wiring connection causing problem. Cannot return new AVR- asking $150 plus postage for old one- Larry

    10+10=30???

On my 8v71ti I have block heaters which are on separate circuit breakers but share a common hot lead. When each block heater is on individually it draws about 10 amps but when they are both on they draw 30. Does that make sense?? Could this be due to them sharing the same hot lead? Larry

    CO2 monster placement

We frequently anchor in Offats Bayou in Galveston and run the diesel generator/Ac at night. There is the possibility a gasoline powered vessel could anchor up wind so I was thinking of adding a CO2 monster. Where, on a 53MY, would be the best location for it ? Larry
