    Running fast at night

I just had an argument on another boat forum (the hull truth, what a bunch of idiots) about running fast at night (I run slow at night - 10 knots or less), and the hazards of hitting semi submerged objects like logs, etc that are invisible on radar. The guy arguing with me was from Florida...

    Termites!

I found termite droppings on deck under the portable wooden step stool (original Hatt part with teak top) in the cockpit last week. Fortunately the problem is confined to a piece of construction douglass fir someone used to beef up one of the corners at some time, and the bugs are in...

    In love with 48 LRC

I was at the boatyard today, and saw a 48 LRC nearing launch that just had a cockpit extension (~10'), flybridge, cockpit overhead, and a bow thruster added. About $200k all together with new paint and such. I guess the guy likes the boat. BTW the 4-53's went untouched.......

    Raw water pump setup

There have been a few threads about 110v vs 32V pumps, and how they might be tied together. Wellll....I had my camera at the boat this weekend and took a pic of my plumbers nightmare. I have both varieties, plumbed together with a Y valve so one can die or be removed for surgery without losing...

    Ohana's new wheels

They finally arrived. "Skew KCA series" 33"X30" cupped, 30 degree skew 80% blade area 5 axis CNC machined ZF nibral four blades. I can't wait to fit them and see how they work.

    Twin discs slinging oil

Both of my 2:1 twin discs sling oil out of the rear shaft seal when running. After a ~three hour 1850 rpm run, they have thrown (in micro sized droplets) maybe 2 good sized drops or so, (less than 1/2 cc) the starboard one a bit less. I probably wouldn't even notice, but with snow white...

    Adjusted schedule

I just got a big promotion at work (BFD) and I wrote the job description as an 80% position. Now I get a three day weekend every weekend. More time to play with the boat........Yippeee! Yes, I'm partially retiring....well, 20% of the time anyway.....at the ripe old age of 50. Neener...

    Check this one out

I don't care too much for the excess of white bulkheads, but otherwise...WOW. And for her condition, she's cheap...

    Manual bilge pump

I removed the non functional (original I think) manual bilge pump from my pump room (center) bilge, and was going to pitch it and replace it with a modern one. Before I bought a new one, I took it home and dissassembled it, and all it needed to function was a new flapper valve. So I said "what...

    How many years?

Ownership of a Hatteras is usually something a boater grows into, something for the connossuer of fine boats. It's unusual for a Hatt to be a "first boat". That being said, a new boat appeared on my dock this weekend, a beautiful 1974 42C. I talked to the new owner (of course) and he said it...

    Went fishin'

With my son, 15 days offshore on the Red Rooster III. Caught this one (and several more like it) in Puerto Vallarta bay, at a spot called cleophus bank. When the fishin' hole is 1000 miles from home, it's a lot easier to go on one of San Diego's long range boats. Sleep whenever you want...

    Nutical humor

I saw this on another forum, and thought some of them were pretty funny. Nautical Terms: Ahoy The first in a series of four letter words commonly exchanged by skippers as their boats approach one another Bar Long. Low lying navigational hazard, usually awash, found at river mouths and harbour...

    GFO from McMaster

I won't admit how much I just paid for GFO packing at the yard. Well, I was looking through McMaster Carr this morning for something else, and ran across GFO packing, they have 1/2" material for $12.96/ft if you buy 25ft. If you buy 5 ft, it's $16.29/ft.!!! Moral of the story, look...

    battery changing

Well, I changed the 32V banks today, all 8 of them 135 pound suckers. 5 steps up and down (and up and down and up and down.....) from the cockpit to the engine room, and made all new cables while I was at it. Wow, that was fun! I need a shower.

AHH-the smell of varnish in the morning

It reminds me of slavery. I'm varnishing a galley table cup/condiment holder and the fragrance reminds me of my childhood spent endlessly sanding and brushing and rubbing and and and and.......... on my father's all varnished teak sailboat. How can people own wooden boats on purpose? Get a life!

    Photo file size

I'd like to contribute some photos, but the allowed file size is in the jurassic period. All of my boat pics are 1.35 megs or larger. I stashed them in hosting sites like photobucket, but this forum can't swallow those files. Can this be changed, to reflect the abilities of modern cameras? The...

    Low Dock Voltage

The marina I'm in (for the last 8 years) was just rebuilt, new floating concrete docks, electrical, plumbing, the works. Even most of the the pilings are new. I think we have the highest slip rent in the harbor, as we are the closest marina to the open ocean, about two miles. The fly in the...

    Strange whistling sound

With diesel in San Diego topping $4.00/gallon, it makes you think about how much it costs to push up the throttles. I was conducting the obligatory yearly extended family harbor/booze cruise last weekend, and was asked the usual question "what'll she do?", so I pushed her up to 2150 for a while...

    New blinds-recommendation

The mini blinds in the salon of my 60' convertible are nearing the end of their service life. (aren't we all  ) They are Homeless Depot-ish aluminum ones, nothing special. The Admiral likes the look of blinds vs curtians, and wants to replace them with roughly the same thing. Does anybody...
