Tsunami report from San Diego bay

Unlike Hawaii, the tsunami caused by the Chilean earthquake was a real event in San Diego. San Diego bay is 26 miles long, with a narrow entrance pointed due south. Currents above 20 knots were reported in several places in the bay, we saw 7-10 knots SIDEWAYS to our slip, with white water and...

    cool stuff at work

As some of you know, I'm an engineer, and design scientific hardware for a living. Some of it is interesting. It looks like I made the paper, the first time since I retired from pro racing ~30 years ago. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/22/health/22brain.html?ref=science

    Old Capac system

I just completed a 2 week haul today, going in for bottom paint soda blasting and the rest of the usual stuff. 15 boat bucks in all. For the last month or so, I've been noticing some corrosion that looked to me like electrolysis (my starboard main strainer basket was attacked) so of course I...

    Dueling 60C's

Today in the yard I was rebuilding a sea strainer in the ER while the 20,000 layers of bottom paint were being soda blasted off, and when I came up for a break and looked forward, I saw....a mirror? Nah, can't be, where's my dinghy? So I went down to investigate, and ...... Turns out...

    Galley Maid rebuild quality?

I'm a happy camper. I spent three hours today changing out a galley Maid head pump for a factory rebuilt one (motor was attacked by saltwater that got past a leaky seal on the old one...it was D.O.A) and the newly rebuilt one doesn't run, the motor's apparently dead (yes, it's getting 35Vdc the...

    Riviera goes bankrupt

My dock buddy is a friend of Tom Ellsworth, the owner of Ellsworth Marine, the Riviera importer. He got back from Australia today after signing the papers YESTERDAY to put Riviera into bankruptcy. With a scoop like this, I should have been a reporter.

    Friday music

Time for a thread that's not political. Well, it's Friday afternoon, almost time to fight the obcene SoCal traffic home for the weekend. It's time for FRIDAY MUSIC! Friday music should be bombastic and rowdy, played with the volume turned up to 11. My office stereo features a 200 watt rms amp...

    Scoop vs non-scoop intakes

The last time I hauled my 60c, the yard manager suggested I replace the scoop type outer strainers (slots facing forward only) on the thru hulls for the bait tank/washdown pumps and AC raw water with non scoop examples. His reasoning was that I didn't want raw water force fed to those pumps any...

    Etiquette for passing other brands

When I pass an inferior brand in the channel, I always give them the same courtesy I would another Hatt. It's the gentlemanly thing to do, "Nobless oblige" and all that. When this unfortunate mixing of the blood lines occurs in a narow channel, I just try to turn a blind eye to the degradation...

    Fuel prices going back down

I'm fueling in the morning. I was quoted $4.30/gallon for +1000 gallons today at High Seas Fuel Dock in San Diego. It might actually turn out to be cheaper than that, as "I think the price is gonna drop overnight" according to the owner. I was going to buy my next fuel in Mexico, but the price...

    Converting tower to folding chair

I'm thinking about removing the tower from my 60c and converting it into a truly unique den chair. It might end up a little tall, but I have a 37 ft ceiling in the den.... What do you guys think?

Long range trip on the Red Rooster III

My son and I just got back from a 16 day long range trip on the 105ft Rooster, 18 anglers, 7 crew, and a CHEF!! We ended up fishing the Hurricane Bank, a 60 fathom spot 1/2 mile long ~500 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas (REALLY out in the middle of nowhere) for 6 days on the hook. We caught...

    Easiest repair in boating history

The hydrualic pump for my Comnav AP started making dead bearing/air in the oil/grenaded pump (pick one or more) noises the last time I had the boat out, and the system air pressure is fine. Sounds like an expensive, nightmare to reach hassle. Typical boat problem, right? Today, I crawled under...

    San Diego firestorm

Did any of you east coat types hear about it? It's been a little bit too exiting. I missed being burned out by three miles. I haven't heard from Ben (Daybreak) since the fires started, and he had to RUN from his house. I hope he's OK.

    Are these OEM?

I found these hanging from some rusty old bolts in the bulkhead in the pump room, hidden behind the deep freeze. There is a mysterious stain on the deck under the spot, and even bleach won't remove it. Does anybody recognize them? Here I included a picture of the "mystery rigging" on a...

    Heads don't drain

Here's the problem. The master head has been giving me trouble for a while. Raw water pumps in just fine, but (sometimes) the bowl doesn't get pumped out, as if the pump had lost it's prime or something. After filling the bowl almost to the rim and waiting for 30 seconds, I hit the button again...

    Island style

Seen at Nawiliwili harbor, Kauai. When one Whaler isn't enough........ Do you suppose this is what Richard Bertram intended? Boiling schools of Aku (skipjack tuna). Millions of fish, 2-10 pounds each. These schools are acres in size. Lots of bait for Ahi, Marlin, and Mahi.

Since the software upgrade, I can't see any avatars. I went to the control panel and made sure "show avatars" was selected. Still no joy. Anyone else or is it just me?
