    Corroded Exhaust Elbow

I found a leak in the first SS elbow after the shower on the port 6V92. This exhaust system was upgraded from 6" to 8" by a PO. I got a mechanic to do the job because I can't access the area outboard and aft of the engine. Had a new one fabricated ($650) and have fingers crossed. The leaker had...

    Amazon.com for DD Parts!

I changed my Jabsco impellors recently and did a search on Google for replacements for the spare parts locker. Prices varied from $85 (list) down to $34. Amazon showed them for $64. A call to the $34 vender proved they were a come-on. Real price was $64. I went to Amazon.com and re-entered the...

    Surveyor Recommendations in New Jersey?

My son has found a 44 Viking MY that he likes and needs recommendations for hull and DD671 surveys in New jersey. Any recommendations? Karl, how would you expect a good 671 TIB to behave in your 30 sec compression test in winter weather? Will it even start with out preheating? Bob Chateau de...

    Hands-off Chain Washdown

A couple of us have discussed how to make a hands-off washdown for anchor chain. I just fabricated one but have yet to test it in mud, but the pictures below show it. The body is DWV PVC, sized to allow the chain to pass through. The funnel end is a 3" to 2" reducer and the 'Y' is 1.5'X2". I...

    Cruising to Marathon

I'll be casting the lines off Chateau de Mer on Christmas eve for a slow cruise to Marathon with my daughter, son-in-law and grandson. We will spend Christmas day and the following day at the New River Municipal marina and then anchor most of the rest of the trip. Planning on a day or so in the...

    Zinc prices?

I was about to 'invest' in a couple of years worth of zincs for the Chateau de Mer and then had a thought... Is the commodity price of zinc dropping like other metals? I don't need them yet, but maybe it is worth waiting? And, does anyone know a good current source? Bob

    Sign of the times?

Here is a 58' Sea Ray type boat with a 50' sports fish on the hip. They were under command of National Liquidators. Going to auction? I took this shot last weekend as it passed through the rail road bridge east of the old Rosevelt Bridge on the St. Lucie River at Stuart. Tight squeeze. You can...

    Oil Splatter II

Here is the other area with oil splatter. See the area marked with an arrow on blue tape. It is on a housing (sorry, I'm not smart enough to know what it is) Just behind the engine but not too far forward of the splatter in the previous post. Again, 6V92TA. Bob

    Oil splatters below turbo

I'm going to break this into two threads. My last engine room check after returning to Port St. Lucie, FL from Baltimore revealed two places which had an oil splatter. I didn't see these the day before, but perhaps overlooked it. Here are two pictures of the splatter on the raw water pipe...

    Viking 44 MY: Thoughts please

My son wants to move up to a 44 Viking MY from a 37' Silverton. Does anyone have any thoughts on these boats? Not a Hatteras of course, but seem well built from what I can see. Also they typically have DD 671TIB's. What's the life expectancy when pushing a 40,000 pound boat? Thanks, Bob...

    Hull insurance fro Hatteras owners??

I just ran across the following on another boating site. Thought I'd try to resurect the idea of some kind of special deal for Hatt owners. If GB owners cann pull it off, why not Hatteras owners? Bob 1a. insurance rates Posted by: "Seymour Badern" sybaden@verizon.net seymour6480 Fri Oct...

The results are in on new props

We just completed the annual trip from Baltimore to Port St. Lucie, FL on the 1981 48MY with 6V92's (425hp). Encouraged by Brian's results, I had the spare props repitched from 26X22 (with a cup) to 26X23.5 without a cup. Hatteras literature for the boat suggested the original wheels were 26X23...

    Voltage drop when cranking

How far do you expect the voltage to drop when cranking. I have 6V92's and just noticed the bridge gages go to nine or ten volts when cranking. The 8D batteries are five or six years old, but use little water and show 12.7 volts at rest. Bob

    Stiff prop shaft

One last question guys. My boat has three cutless bearings per shaft and a dripless packing gland. The prop is VERY hard to turn by hand suggesting I'm wasting fuel. My diver tells me the other Hatts in the basin take much less effort to spin the wheels while in the water. I've probably put 800...

    Thermostats for low speed operation

Wen I run the 48MY at 1000 rpm, the engine temperature comes up to 160-165F. A little marginal so I bump it up once a day to heat them up and clear the carbon. One of our HOF members who has the same boat and engines reports his 6V92's run 180 F at 1000 rpm, and that only increases 5 degrees at...

Prop size for better slow speed performance

Brian's posts on over-propping for better economy at displacement speeds continues to intrigue me, so I have decided to try it before I take the Chateau de Mer to Florida in October. However, I'd like to over prop it by increasing pitch rather than diameter because it is easier and cheaper...

    Cruisair Blower Just Hums

The blower on the salon AC unit quit I think (1981 220V 16000 BTU). I had it off overnight, and this morning it just hummed and got warm when I turned it on. Last night all seemed OK. I do not have a manual for it and don't see a way to oil the bearings. Getting it out is going to be a PITA...

    6-71 TI life?

Any idea what the typical life of a DD 4-71TI 300 hp or 6-71TI 450 hp engine would be assuming it wasn't abused? Thanks, I'm inquiring for my son who is getting the itch for a bigger boat. The former were put in some Chris' that he is interested in. Bob

Florida to Baltimore at 8 kts

Some of you know my wife's health prevented her from making the trip from Port St. Lucie to Baltimore this year. This would have been our seventh round trip, five on our trawler and two on the Series I 48MY. Anyway I wanted to pass along some info about the trip that may be of interest...
