    Pettit Metal Primer Experience

I just realized I forgot to report on my experience with Pettit metal primer. This was discussed here last year but I could not find the thread. Last October, Atlantic Yacht Basin repainted my antifouling with the usual Pettit Trinidad Pro and they said they could make it stick to the...

    Dryer Repair, 1981 48MY

While we are discussing laundry units for our boats, I thought it worth starting a new thread on a simple repair in case it might help somebody in the future. I believe the Kenmore/Whirlpool combo washer/dryer in Chateau de Mer is a replacement to the original and was installed in 1989. Anyway...

    Dodged Another Bullit

You may remember when we got to Florida last fall we had a transom soot issue. The local DD mech replaced all six injectors on the port engine and it improved, but didn't return to normal. I just had my local guy check that engine and he found all the injectors were set wrong, about .030"...

    5/16" Push Pins wanted

I'm looking for an AVK 5R 1.75 push pins for the boarding ladder. These are 5/16" diameter with a grip length of 1.75" and a push button release in stainless steel. A 2" grip length would be OK too. Anybody have some laying around? Bobk

    Easy Washer Repair

I thought I'd post this in the hope it will help someone else in the future. Our old combo washer drier started to fill very slowly on cold water. Hot was OK. I suspected a bad water fill solenoid and bought one, but on disconnecting the hose, I found the screen in the solenoid had plugged up...

    Princess Range Knobs Suck!

Over the last ten years with the 'new' range top and oven we have had many knobs break because they are made of the wrong plastic. As a plastics chemist I know the signs and told Princess what to use, but that falls on deaf ears. I'm tired of buying this expensive junk. Has anyone found a source...

    Vacuflush Problem- need ideas

I'm fixing all the little BS things that occurred over the trip north. The Vacuflush pump for the master head became weak suddenly during the trip. Last winter I did an R/R job on the bowl seals etc. and replaced the duck bills and all was good for several months. Suddenly we got poor vacuum...

    Pressure in Steering System Increased

In May, before our trip north, I checked the steering hydraulic fluid level and pressure and added a bit of fluid and pumped it up to to 30 psi. This afternoon, I found it at 60 psi. The ER is cool. Steering along the trip and when we arrived yesterday was normal. Any ideas? Bobk

    High Racor Vacuum

Looking for ideas. About 120 hours ago I switched out a pair of 30 micron Racors for 2 micron hoping I'd polish the fuel a bit. The 30's had been in several years, perhaps 6000 gallons of fuel and still read nice an low vacuum, about 2", at my 1000 rpm cruise and perhaps 5" at WOT. So, I ran...

True Confessions - Read and Heed

I'm posting this to hopefully save some else from the hazard I was unaware of. My Galley Maid windlass has an aftermarket 'down' thrust bearing. It must be lubricated with white spray grease a couple of times a year and a small diameter copper tube was installed for the purpose. Yesterday I...

    Anchoring Cruise on LIS

I'm thinking this might be the year for an 'anchoring mostly' cruise of Long Island Sound. I'd be arriving via Hells Gate. I've done some searching on Active captain for a good 2-3 week trip, but can't seem to get my arms around a plan. I do not want to spend the $$$ for the area marinas or even...

1980 42' LRC - Anybody familiar with this boat?

The 48 Series I MY (dual mode hull) has a soft entry like a trawler and no chine that could assist lift and planning. About 2/3 the way aft, it becomes a more typical hard chine. With 671N's it can reach 10, maybe 11 knots. Mine has 6V92 TA's at 425 HP, and it will make 18 knots with a clean...

    Turbo Oil Leak

While rooting around the starboard engine I noticed a very slight oil sheen on the outboard turbo (6V92TA). This is from what I'll call a cover plate on the cold side. Is this a serious problem that needs to be addressed? And if so, is this likely to require a complete rebuild or simply a seal...

    Transom soot and black smoke

What all can cause these symptoms? We docked in Southport NC some days ago and all was well. When we arrived in St Augustine, we found a lot of soot on the transom and saw black smoke belch from the port engine when I goosed it in reverse for picking up a ball. It happened again last night in...
