    Cool After All These Years

I just did a technical detail of the engines and engine room, J&T 6-71N's in a '72 43'DCMY. This was followed by a two day move of the boat from St. Ignace, MI, where it had been on the hard, and to Grand Haven and our new moorage. The detailing work took 5 weeks of 2 days each weekend...

    Genset No Fire/ Fuel Pump

Splashed and was starting all engines. Genset, Onan MDJE 7.5Kw, started instantly, ran 10-15 secs, stopped and would not restart. I will be pulling the primary fuel pump, as I think that is the issue. But before I do in a few days, thought I would post here, for further ideas. I pulled the...

    Thanks Boat/US, GSP 'Saved'

Thanks Boat/US, GPS 'Saved' It has been announced that the company LightSquared (LS) has or will be going backrupt shortly. They are the people who had a high speed 4G wireless network design that would have greatly degraded GPS systems, anywhere that LS was deployed, at great danger and life...

    $16 Diesel...Its Here!

Yes friends and dear Hatt boaters, from the people who brought you Nationalized Heathcare and Solyndra ($500B [yes B, not M] down the rathole), comes $16/gal diesel. Lest you think I speak in jest, read on. The "Fuel" budget for the entire US Dept. of Defense is managed/administered by a...

    In-Frame Major- Ran and Hid

Well, I was pumped up about doing an in-frame on my Port 6-71N. The first tech bailed on me, due to family circumstances. I just got off the phone with the 2nd, and the estimate for the work rose (jumped?) from around $7,500 to $12,000, incl re-building the blower. Maybe this belongs in the...

    "Cored" Granite, 36mph, 300hp, 42'

That's the spec's on a current boat test of a Regal 42' MY/Contertible (?). To get 36mph out of 300hp (my 43' Hatt makes 16.7kt out of 310hp), you need to weigh 18k #'s (specs), which is half the weight of the ole Hatt. And you get corian and lots of coring. What is that? Making of a...

    Props...Struts...for MSU that is...

Just got back from the MSU-Wisc Football game. Big crowd, noisy as I have ever see at Spartan Stadium. 0 penalties on the Sparties, as they looked very determined. As good a college game as I have seen, esp. since the excitement of college ball are the mistakes. These are not pro's, but...

    Price Drop?!

Don't think this has been posted yet. Was looking idly at a Hatt '78 53' MY, when I heard the price: $100k. So I took the tour of her. She has 8v71Ti's, post-installed Stabs and thruster, and 13' or so rib. Asking price is down to $100k. Very clean, 600hrs SMOH on mains, ER's very clean...

    2 Valve or 4 Valve

Any general knowledge out there about whether my 1972 6-71N was a 2 valve or 4 valve head engine. When I re-build, the tech assumption is that it will be a 2 valve, because he is preparing a 4 valve head for an "upgrade". So is it fair to assume that at this age of engine, it is a 2 valve head?

    Low Cost Hatt Alternative

My Hatt is an older ('72 43'DC), a legacy they now call it, so my price was 'decent' (I guess), when I bought her in 1997. Some of the newer ones, well they cost a lot more. But prices are way down now, but I will stand pat. Ran into a friend the other day, who also had an older 43'DC, but...

    It's Not Beer...

So I am walking the streets of Mackinac Island this time of year, as is my wont, hoping the shops don't shred my wallet. Watched MSU Football at the Pink Pony (my first time there although been to the Island for decades). Good guitar singer and had a great time. So next day walking down a...

    DD Kits Source

I am now committed to an in-frame overhaul this Fall on one of my J&T 6-71N, circa 1972 (the other has already been done). My tech has an un-named parts source from 'somewhere in FL', which is priced at $1,360 for kits, bearings, and gaskets. I have a quote from WW Williams for their...

    Know Your Hatteras Colors (paint)

I am painting some boat items and surfaces on my '72 43'DC, but I am trying to use the newer Hatt color paints, rather than the legacy white, which was a cream color. I am in possession of Interlux Brightside "4208 Hatteras Off-White" (polyurethane), plus I have "read about" a white, less than...

    This Anchor is For You

There is some whining about anchor size on the HOF from time to time. So I now post this 500 pounder for those to whom 'size matters'. Might need a crane to get it aboard though...

New A/C Water Pump is "In There"

I just replaced my old Cal Pump with the March brand pump as suggested by HOF here and by Sam's for my heat/AC raw water flow. The Cal had popped off of its rubber mounts (tech installed) in a big sea and when it did, the press fit came apart with the pump spewing its internal bath of oil all...

How the Guv Creates a Job

Caterpillar just got fined a cool $250Mil (that's a 1/4 bn) by the EPA, because some of their diesel's are not meeting emissions. I guess the fine will be used to create some jobs (US gov), since Cat will no longer have the funds. Recent major 'oil' find in OH. EPA or equiv is blocking the...

    Mack Isle Labor Day

Fun post that I tried to get a slip at Mack Isle for Labor Day. But full up. So I'll drive up early and be first in the Harbor Fleet. Usually get a slip right away. My guess is that it'll be 30 years before Mack City ever fills up those two marina's.

    Dangerous 2-4' Seas

I hope I am not tempting the devil with this post, but there have been two recent Great Lakes boating accident stories, both Lk Mich in the same general area, that featured 2-4 seas; at least that is what was 'reported'. One such accident resulted in the deaths of two sailors. Are these Hatt's...
