I’m shopping for a new boat. I’ve found a boat I really like but it doesn’t fit in my slip. It will fit in the slip 2 down from mine. That slip renter's boat will fit in my slip but, he doesn’t want to switch slips. The marina manager says it’s not the slip renter's decision but, rather his (the marina manager). The manager says his job is to accommodate the boats however possible. I’m just interested in the forum consensus. Would you keep hunting for a boat that fits in your slip? Or, would you let the manager move the guy?
 
Unless that slip is somehow special like wider, better finger pier, or easier to get in and out,…) I don’t understand why he doesn’t want to move. I would.

Most marina contracts do not specify the exact slip so it is really the marina’s call.

His slip is 58' and his boat is 38'. My slip is 49'. Though my slip does have a private finger, his slip would be easier for him to get in and out of.
 
My vote is find the boat you like.
Slip assignment is between management and the renter, and your marina has already told you how they view it.
 
I think certainly find the boat you like! As for the slip.....remember you have to live there. There must be other slips there or in other marinas. I know its not what you want but you are the one buying a bigger boat not your neighbor. I guess it depends how long that guy has been in that slip. Lots of perspectives on this.
 
I'd make the guy move. You've already done the right thing and talked to him, it sounds like he's placing his personal preference for having his 40' boat inside a 58' slip over your actual need of you can't have the boat unless you can't have the slip. Those two things aren't the same, and it sounds like he's being a dick.

99% of the time the slip rental contracts only give you the right to use a size category of slip in that marina, they almost never entitle you to a specific slip. Legally, if the marina manager wants him to move, then he has to.
 
It is a business decision for the marina. Most charge by the foot. They would rather move him and have your larger boat in the slip for higher profit margin. They are losing revenue on that slip with him in it when they have the opportunity to put a boat that will pay more in that slip and move him around to the proper size slip
 
you will still be his neighbor so you dont want to piss him off....nothing like not getting along with your boat neighbor
 
I once had a 30' boat in a 48' slip in preparation to buying a larger boat. The marina charged me for the longer slip, not my boat length. If he is paying I personally think it's his slip. Maybe he is a problem customer and management is trying g to make him leave.

The dock master should be able to convince the other boat to accept a slip reassignment. One dosen't own a slip.

I've been around enough boat dock neighbors.
Frack him.
Buy the dock master lunch and he will fix your problems.
 
Offer to pay a couple months of his slip rental. If he doesn’t agree ask him if he likes sleeping with the fish
 
Interesting dilemma. You have to live with the boat you choose, I think finding a boat you like is the most important thing.
 
RSmith, you mean first offering him two months' rent, and when he says no, offering him ONE months' rent? LOL
 
The marinas that I've been in charge by the foot for your boat but also have a minimum charge for certain size slips. It could likely have been a situation where they only had the bigger slip available when he showed up and they let him have it for the footage rate of his boat. If he wants to keep his oversized slip in light of there being a smaller one available and a larger boat needing his slip, then I guess he needs to pony up the minimum rate for the one he's in (if he isn't already). This would be up to the marina management of course. If they don't make him move under these circumstances, then go elsewhere. If he doesn't like it, let HIM go somewhere else. If he is going to get his panties in a wad about it, then he'll just be one less person that you have to make idle chit chat with when you are simply trying to enjoy the solitude of being on your boat.

I certainly wouldn't let the size of my current slip dictate the size of my future boat.
