58' TRIPLE CABIN (1970 - 1976)
Both my Hatts have large, manually operated bilge pumps which were installed at the factory. I found out (quite by accident) that the one on my 41 doesn't work any more.

Is their routine maintenance required on these pumps?
 
Replace that plastic POS with a brass unit! Mine is totalled also... the handle is busted as well as the hose barb on the bottom. Those pumps make it compliant with USCG regs as to having a "manual bailing device onboard". ws

Sorry Willie, but mine are brass and are OEM as far as I know. The one on the 41 is mounted inside the forward head and is very heavy duty. I last used it about a year ago when there was a problem with the shower sump which made for water in what is normally a dry as a bone area forward where this thing picks up.

Something went goofy this week-end with the forward head which filled with water and overflowed, so that's when I realized the thing wasn't working. I can't image having to prime such a pump, and I checked to see if there was anything obstructing the pick-up. All's clear, but nothing happens when I work the pump.
 
The OEM pump on my boat didn't work either, it was bulkhead mounted in the pump room. Dissassembly revealed the leather flapper valve to be decomposed.
Instead of throwing it away and replacing it with a plastic one from Whale, I restored it, using silicone rubber sheet for the flapper valve. Here it is installed.

I know it won't work as well as a more modern one, but I like the way it looks
 
Gee, mine doesn't work either... Looks like a trend going on... I haven't messed with mine as my thinking is, if the existing 9 electric pumps can't handle a problem, the manual one isn't going to matter
 
We had the original brass one but it had red rubber caps that were dry rotted so I pulled it and tossed it.

Randy, I seem to remember on Freebird you had a grey plastic one with a 50' hose duct taped to it and the hose running out your aft cabin window. Damn thing worked well. Remember some guy found the stuff in a time of need and rigged it up.

Yep, that's the same as the one that's on my 41. Sucker worked great right up until the time it stopped working. Funny how it always works like that huh?

It's just hard to see how it could go from fully functional to non-functional in such a short period of time, especially given it's freshwater. So I assume there are no OEM rebuild kits. Maybe I'll give Steve a call at SAM's and see if he has anything.

Nah, that was one that some Florida cracker rigged up. :D

Actually, the one on the 58 is the same as on the 41. It too worked last time I checked, but who knows?
 
Mine is broke also. Post what Sam has to say pls…
 
I called Steve and left a message. I'll post the results when he calls back.
 
Get some 1/16" thick sheet rubber and the right size O ring for the shaft seal, and you've got the "rebuild kit" Cut a new flapper valve out of the sheet with scissors (to replace the leather one that rotted out, that's why the pump quit) polish the bore of the main tube with scotchbrite to get out the goo, install the new o ring, and reassemble.
If you get all fancy pants about it like I did, clean, polish and laquer the brass before you assemble.
 
Just got a return call from Steve who did some checking for me but came up empty. There was a rebuilt kit available through Jabsco, but they are no longer available. I'll take mine apart and see what I can see. Surely to God it can't be that complicated to make a flapper like Dave talked about.

Personally, I wouldn't be looking for more efficiency, I'd be looking to keep things original and getting out as cheaply as possible. If it were just a matter of keeping the CG happy, I'd plumb in a plastic POS and call it a day.
 
Good timing, I went to take mine out and throw it away because I thought mine wasnt working. I took it off the boat, filled up a bucket of water, tried it out and it worked damn well. I just re-installed it and it seems to be working fine. Not very complicated. Simple to repair....

I think these are known as "Navy" pumps. I suppose they are reliable if the flappers are maintained. Their big problem is that when pumping, on the up stroke you are physically lifting the column of water in the handle. Then it is pushed out on the downstroke. As the pumps are squeezed into the corner access is poor. You can't pump much without exhaustion because you can't get your back into it. Keep them if you want authenticity. But if you really want to pump water, get a diaphragm pump such as the Whale Gusher. Much larger capacity. Just be sure to have a big strainer on the intake to keep stuff from catching in their flapper valves. With the Whale at least the valves can be cleared by removing the single large hose clamp around the barrel of the pump, just one screw.
 
My boat does not have a manual pump and it doesn't show one in the Hatteras manual either. I can't see any place where it would have been mounted. I always found that strange, but I still haven't installed one.
 
Our '86 36C has a modern bellows pump mounted on a board with 2 long pieces of ribbed hose. We also have a copper tublin handle. Ours works fine and is OEM. One of the diagrams in our owners manual shows the complete pump assembly.
 
Damn broke crap! Did you pull it apart yet?
 
Our 61 has one it's mounted below the floor in the V berth hanging locker. The handle fits in and is operated within the locker. It was stuck when I bought the boat it's still stuck now and I'm pretty sure it will be stuck when I sell it. Seems useless We've got 5 bilge pumps an engine driven emergency pump and we carry an 1 1/2" sump pump. If I ever got to the point that I'm thinking about the hand pump I should probably get on deck and put on a life jacket.
