My Simrad auto pilot works perfectly under all conditions except 2ft plus following seas where it makes the boat (a 43'DC) zig and zag like crazy. Has anyone been able to get theirs to control the boat better under such conditions?
Thanks - Will
Per the June/July 2011 issue of the magazine Professional Mariner, Marine Inland Fabricators (MIF) in Panama City, Florida, recently built a small tug powered by twin 6-71s and a ferry powered by an 8V-71. Both boats are going to Nigeria.

1980 43' DCFB. I'm interested in removing the exterior teak hand rails to strip and varnish. It looks to be straight forward but I'm concerned about removing the stainless steel end caps. It looks as if the caps are slid over the ends of the teak railings then secured with two screws on the...
Does anyone have experience with reducing exhaust fumes entering the cockpit or aft deck? Many newer boats have exhaust exiting on the sides near the stern and some have deflectors on stern exhausts, directing gases to the sides. Have any of you folks tried converting to these options? The...
How do you install a Jabsco Sea Water Pump on a 6-71 TIB? I'm having problems getting the pump drive gear to mesh with the inside of the coupling gear which turn, slides into a multi-tooth socket on one of the gear train gears. The pump was removed from the drive plate adapter which is still...
An update !!!
Problem was not the oil cooler at all. It turns out that the gear box vent is under the Sea Water pump and dip stick tube is on the side. A water leak developed in the pump's cover plate spraying water into the vicinity of both. Good thing it happened because removing the...
This anchor alarm app for cell phones looks pretty cool. Between the depth sounder, radar and GPS plotter, I have sources for anchor watch alarms but nothing with with alarms loud enough to hear from the cabin.
Have any of you folks tried one ?

43' DC with 485 HP 6-71 TIs.
I noticed about 1/4 in. of the shaft key sticking out behind the coupling to the trans. and was able to push it back in without resistance. The center nut holding the coupling to the shaft seems to be tight. I'm told it's the coupling to shaft taper that takes the...
Our 1980 43' Double Cabin is powered by 485 HP, 6-71 TIBs with 1.51:1 gear boxes. Hatteras put 24D x 23P, 4 blade props on the boat.
What reduction gears ratios and prop sizes did they put on other 6-71 (6-71 N's, 6-71 TIs, etc.) powered 43' DCs?
Just curious -

I need a photo showing original colors of the pointer and the scale of an AC Delco 12 v volt gauge (the one on an engine gauge panel). If anyone has such a guage in good condition, I'd appreciate a photo of it. Otherwise, does anyone know where I can see a photo of one.
Thanks - Will
vindentc 6-71ti's and jaxfishgyd 6-71ns both report using 6GPH @ 9 kts. while I calculate 10 GPH @ 9kts (1200 RPM for me). I don't know if their readings are by calculation or FloScans. I see no fuel leaks, smoke, soot, etc. I have 1.5:1 gear boxes and both engine WOT at about 2350 RPM under...
