Raw Water System Flush - Phosphoric Acid - My experience

A Phosphoric Acid solution worked well for me in flushing the raw water systems for the Detroits, generator and AC. Engine operating temperature dropped roughly 30 degrees and sea water flow through the generator doubled. I had concerns regarding acid concentration and checked the MSDS for...

    Zinc for Intercooler Yes/No?

After flushing the engines raw water system I started replacing the engine zincs. I noticed there were brass plugs just below were the raw water lines enter and exit on each end of the 1983 Detroit 671 TI intercoolers .. The plugs looked like the smaller engine zinc plugs so I undertook to...

Raw Water Flush for Detroit 671 after overheat

Lilly Marie developed an overheat issue a few weeks ago. The starboard engine usually goes no higher than 165 degrees however it got up to 185. I assumed the impeller needed replacement; but when I pulled it, there was no apparent damage. Since its been probably 6 years since I flushed the raw...

Garmin Fantom Radar 18x vs 24x

My old Garmin radar quit working and I've decided to replace it with a solid state Fantom and trying to decide if the extra 6 inches is worth the additional $800.l I don't care about finding birds, just collision avoidance in reduced visibility. Shared experience will be appreciated. Thanks

    3 8v vs 2 12v batteries

I putting together a 24v battery bank of Golf Cart Batteries for a trolling motor. Any thoughts regarding the use in series of (3) 8volt batteries vs (2) 12 volt batteries. I have sufficient space for either option.

    435 hp 4208 Cats in a Cabo 35

My nephew is looking at buying a mid 1990s Cabo with 435 hp Cats 2500+ hours. He asked what his Hatteras owning uncle thought about the boat. I said I’d check. Insight appreciated. Thanks

    That Diesel Smell

After several weeks of not going aboard I noticed a strong diesel smell in the saloon. A check of the ER revealed some diesel below the deck between the engines. Stated removal with a hand transfer pump, graduated to using a shop vac. Probably took out 4 gallons of fuel. Started looking for...

    Detroit Turbo Parts Source

After 39 years the flange which connects to exhaust housing for the turbo charger on the stbd 671ti broke off. Will need to replace the housing or perhaps replacing the whole turbo might work. Any suggestions re sources for parts. Considering the boat's age and mine, used parts might make sense.

    Mysterious Large Bubbles

While running the engines at the dock I notices large bubbles coming out from under the port side of the boat every few seconds. This is located approximately 2 feet aft of the aft engine room bulkhead and only appear on the port side of the boat. Since I first noticed this, it occurs every time...

    Inverter Lessons Learned/ Shared

2013 I installed an inverter system on Lilly Marie. Overall I have been well pleased. The Magnum 2800 MS system has worked well, was used often and saved unnecessary generator use. The 4 lead acid 6v batteries from Sams Club lasted Over 7 years. Replacing the 65# batteries, struggling to...

Inverter Battery Bank to Start Port Engine

I've been well pleased with my Magnum 2812 Inverter with 4 6v golf cart batteries in series/parallel. However, I am tired of the port list created by my placing the battery bank and inverter on the port side of the port engine. It occurred to me that I might move the inverter batteries to the...

Battling Barnacles on the Running Gear

I hauled out 2 months ago to address the port shaft which was much harder to turn than the stbd shaft. Before the haul out, one person who studied my problem said the motor mounts were bad and should be replaced. A second opinion concluded the shaft was bent. The only thing I was convinced of...

Shaft Coupling Removal and Loose shaft Nut

The most difficult part of removing the coupling was the cotter pin. The hole in the coupling was about 3/8" aft of the pin. With the PSS shaft seal, the shaft does not go back very far and to see the cotter pin very well I had to use a mirror to see what I was doing. Retrieving the pin was...

Need Help Removing Internal Sea Strainer

Removing paint around the threads sounds like a good approach. I removed the strainer baskets leaving only the frame. That allowed me to pass a 30" length of pipe thru the frame and get significant leverage. A pipe wrench was necessary to hold the lowers section in place. I have the...
