  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
So, as the son begins to peak out of the clouds in Buffalo, NY the repeated request of my better half is to find a way to paint our 1972 43' Double Cabin. As you might imagine, finding somebody that can paint a boat of this size is a challenge. I don't believe it is possible to paint it (even just the bottom) Without permitting her in a suitable hanger/enclosure. My basic problem is that moving this boat on the land is not practical and finding a shore-side shop has proven to be a daunting task.

Any suggestions?

I finally have her running well (knock on wood), we installed faux teak on the deck and redid / updated the interior. Now, we just need to figure out how to have her painted!

Attaching some pictures of the faux teak decking, etc.

Nice deck. Did you use Nauteak?

Beautiful boat! A 43DC looks best without fly bridge.

On my 43 DCFB, I had the entire deck and aft section primed and painted with Awlgrip 2000 outdoors on the hard it came out great - no blemishes at all. Yard that did it was a Brewers too (fancy), think I got lucky. IMG_3625.webp

Wow - they did that outside? That is truly amazing.

I don't think my "paint guy" is willing to spray outside - the prospect of over-spray is one of his main concerns.

What is your overall height? I don't know about in Buffalo, but down south, they have hydraulic trailers that can move big, heavy boats. They oftern have to get highway permits for over width, over height or over weight. If you can find a warehouse with heat and can get under the power lines it might be doable.

Its a boat. Move her on her own bottom to where you can get it done. When I had my stripes repainted I moved from southern Lake Michigan to Bay City on Lake Huron, Appox 400 miles to get to a yard willing to take on the project.

Winter Harbor Marina in Brewerton, NY is more than capable of giving you an outstanding paint job. They have an indoor spray booth that currently has an 80 footer getting a complete paint job. Give them a shout.

And when your heart stabilizes after getting the quote you may want to Google "Roll and Tip" painting method to apply Awlgrip or similar.

It sounds like you know how to use your hands and you will save a couple of engines worth doing it yourself.

Food for thought.

I used roll and tip. Interlux bright side. 8 years and still looking great.

Have you considered a compound and wax? I might do the trick. If not Roll and Tip of a topside enamel can be amazing.

How long ago you install the faux teak? I am looking for this too.
Thanks.

Last summer - ordered it from Banggood.com and had a flooring guy install. Fraction of th eprice that I was quoted by the US template cutters.

Rolling and tipping works just fine. Get the DVD from Jamestown Distributors and watch it a few times. Learn to work with Awlgrip and that learning will reward you richly.

Among other things, rolling and tipping AG uses much less paint than spraying, so your paint dollars go 2-3x further. If you practice and are careful, you can get spray quality finish on your boat.

Just started back outside on the house rolling with Interlux Perfection. I like the stuff and I have a perfect color match. There is a great 'how to do it' on rolling Perfection by adding up to 20% thinner. I was more than pleased last year and I've gotten better. No tipping for me.

This is second coat of three that will be applied. It will buff up really high gloss. I think this stuff is easier than Awlgrip. Not tipping sure makes it a lot easier.

Robert this looks fantastic. I need to ain’t two side doors this year. Did you use a foam roller. No tipping?

It looks beautiful. It's spray quality, and I don't mean runs, either. :)

If I didn't already have AG on my boat and was looking for a new finish, I'd seriously look at that paint. But I have not found AG difficult to work with, once you have a little experience. I have to do my decks this year- well, the foredeck, the sides, and the aft deck most of all. The bridge is still okay, it gets less wear. Plus it's covered a lot of the time.

Thanks, Rusty, Randy and Jim. You know those “any paint” 4” foam rollers at Lowe’s? Well they ain’t. One Redtree 4” foam roller ($10.50 for 2 at West, $4.25 everywhere else) will do the entire center section of the house without breaking down. Maybe you can handle a larger roller, but I wouldn’t. No tipping. You ever tried holding a paint tray and roller while tipping? I can, if I don’t mind dumping the paint. No tipping is liberating. I like this paint. I have a partial can I’ve stored since last summer in the frig, and it’s perfect. Just get lots and lots of plastic mixing cups. What you saw pictured (center section) was 4 ozs of paint with almost an ounce left over. And it does look sprayed.

Let's see if I have this right... You're getting a good gloss finish with a roller only - no tipping? Sounds almost too good to be true. I rolled and tipped my old Grandbanks with Brightsides and it nearly killed me trying to keep a wet edge. Eliminating a step would be a God send.
