  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' YACHT FISHERMAN (1970 - 1981)
First of all, the Mt. Dora Antique Boat Show is this weekend in Mt. Dora, FL. A nice little event.

WARNING! If you admire a beautifully varnished wood boat, DO NOT look at this picture before bedtime, as it will certainly induce a nightmare!

A friend of mine recently went on an African Safari with an animal conservation group he's a member of. The trip included a 2 night stay in Dubai. While it's no secret that wooden yachts are still quite popular on that side of the world, I flipped when I saw this...

Don't say I didn't warn you!

When not cruising the Med...A full time crew of 3 is continuously varnishing her!

That owner absolutely hates money! Got a name on that boat? Would love to find out what she is all about...

That just doesn't look right. I love glossy, varnished wood on a boat, but there is such a thing as too much of it, and on a modern design boat, it's just freaky. It would look just fine on a 100' Trumpy, though, but not on that boat in the photo.

I have always admired varnished wood on other people's boat.

Questions that come to mind

Wood construction or wood veneer over fg?
Does it look better up close?
What does owner look like?

Regards

This one looks right to me. A real labor of love keeping her looking this good!

Hey...I warned you people this would be "unusual"!!!!

I don't have a boat name or any details other than she is of wood construction, and docked at the Dubai Yacht Club. Sanding. Varnishing. Polishing...Oh My!

Jack, that's more like it. THAT one is beautiful. The other one is just a good example of what happens when someone has a great deal of money, too much time on their hands, no job, and no taste whatever. It may be wood, but it's still one of the ugliest boats I've ever seen. Thank God we didn't have to see the interior.

I like this one. She was originally yellow.

As a shipwright that LOVES timber boats, I have often wondered what a modern style superyacht would look like in in wood.

I was right....................

Sometimes just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you SHOULD do it.:)

For my taste, that's a shocker..........

My bet is that first boat is aluminum painted to look like wood......

That's what I was thinking. Shape doesn't lend itself to planked construction. Not sure what wood could be shaped that way and still be varnish quality.

I'd hope so. I'd hate to think of all those trees coming down to build that.

I bet this is cold molded mahogany epoxy... If Vicem can build its drop dead gorgeous 97 that way, and even a 107, why not this?

All sort of cold molded 100 to 200+ have been built.... Motoryachts, sailboats, etc.. They are usually painted but no reason why the outer layer can't be kept natural.

Throw in a high quality clear topcoat and you re good to go.

Now whether or not a modern styled motoryacht look good in natural wood is another matter. Wouldn't be the first time you find things of questionable aesthetics value in the Middle East. :)

Spot on Pascal. Cold Moulding and Steam bending can do just about anything regarding shape.

My first thoughts were that it was probably vinyl wrapped GRP or Alloy but from what I have read of it - TOUCH WOOD II - is timber.

Timber Motoryachts can be magnificent and very large too but seeing that was not a pleasant experience for me....................

To me it looks like someone has a lot of money, with absolutely no taste in what look good, and probably not a ounce of class.

As soon as this guy sobers up it will be white.

Here she is under construction

It is an impressive build but like I said....... "just because you can doesn't mean you should........."

The photo appears to be taken from another teak build yacht of about the same size also under construction................ gee I hope not................
