Hatterass. Not waht I had orignaly documented the boat. we named her hattahaver or something. Then my dock friends decided to get drunk one night while we were away and come up with a better name. long story short we went to greenport one weekend with a few of us and as usual endend up at Cladio's bar. well around 2am I think we got back to the docks and aftera while eveybody departed for the eving. Are boat a sea ray at the time was docked up against the bulk head and under the lights. My wife and I being young at the time 25 or so, thought that I might, "in our druken stuper" be fun to make out on the dock. well as luck may have it one of our friends comes walking down the dock and sees us. This is the light version by the way. he starts laughing and we quickly pull ourselfs back together. the next day the news was out and traveled so fast it made its way from L.I. to CT before breakfast. even the yard manager who was a friend of mine and had the upmost regards for me new about it. we were reminded of that night for a long time. so when the all got together thats what they came up with. We tried for weeks to get them to answer on the radio to our olod name but they would gust reply with HATTERASS is that you calling? so $300 or so dollare later we re- doc. the boat Hatterass. now when we go to boat shows for chartering people tell us that we spelled Hastteras wrong.I still have not told my parents or inlaw why its named that.

Before our two Hatterases, we had a 36' Trojan Aft Cabin. We bought her from a proctologist who named her......you guessed it...."Rear Admiral".

Capt K

PS, we changed the name.

Great stories guys, its a refreshing change from the bone-head who pulls up in his new luhrs with the name "skirt chaser" or "size matters!". :D

Great people here.

Simple name, simple story. When I bought her, she had been renamed "Ebenezer", which I hated. But the old name was still on the transom "HMS Adventure". I learned that her name was that of the first ship to circumnavigate the globe, not that I will, but was cool. Also, I am quite superstitious about renaming a boat, so kept it. Finally, a very attractive sailfish is painted under the name, which is a non-sequiter, as the Great Lakes have yet to be infested with any of them; not yet anyway.

My other boat, a 1953 40' woodie Chris Craft, is the "Tranquility"...always her name, always will be. In her day, she was well known around the Great Lakes. But she's been the barn a long time now, since went for the tupper ware boat...sorry, nuts for a Hatt! But I visit her once in a while, so she doesn't get lonely. Wife is after me to get rid of her, so hope I'll find a buyer on the West Coast, maybe Seattle.

P.s., to that person who says we type fast or time on hands, no ones been allowed to have a "typist" for a very long time. You learn to type fast your own docs, or you die...email, word docs, instant messages, etc....publish or perish and alla' that'...

After 31 years as a telephone repairman for BellSouth I retired in 2000 and we bought our Hatteras which is named "No Dial Tone".
We ended up selling the house and now live full time onboard....

One boat I owned with 2 other guys had no name initially. After a year of ownership when the boat proved to be total junk, we named it "Cretins III" to indicate how stupid we were to buy it.

Boat just prior to our Hatt - I named "Loretta J" after my wife. I had expected to name/rename the 53Hatt we were searching for as "Loretta J II" but when we found our current boat we kept the name. We had it redone in new gold leaf in the same style as the previous owner had named/lettered it.

"Brigadoon" was the perfect name for this boat and we could not possibly have improved on it... As the line in the musical goes, "Everyone is searching for a Brigadoon."

My fishing buddy has the best name for his 35' Bertram, DEBTORS PRISON.

I like that one...

Gigabite was a compromise - I was going to name her "Byte Me" but had a number of friends who though that was waaaaay too crass..... and one who at the time was important said she'd not get on board if I called her that :D

Used to be in the Internet biz, and of course she's a fishing vessel, so it works.... Had a 25' power cat a couple of years ago that I called "Double Trouble" :D

Karl,
Your old company's website History page is titled "Genesis". Is that how you came up with your screen name?

No..... they're one of my favorite all-time groups, and I've used it as an online "handle" for more than 20 years....

I get a LOT of people who think I'm a Bible Pounder though.... :D

It is Hat Time.

Time well spent on your Hatteras or where I 'd rather be spending my time. As in....I need some Hat Time. Also, when it is time to leave in older parlance, it's time to get your hat. I am thinking about a little Maverick to tie up next to the Hat Time to chase some bonefish around in Biscayne Bay....I can't help thinking I'll name it Flat Time. Hmmmm

We built our house with some castle like details stucco and stone a tower etc. On top there is a cat chasing a mouse weather vane. We have five cats and there is allows a cat looking out of a window, With time our house began to be called "the cat castle" then it was shortened to "The Catsle" So it leads to the Hatteras named "Sea Catsle"

My first so called big boat was a Trojan 25' express after owning several run abouts. AT that time it was a stretch so I came up with the name Will Power, which is the name I still use after another Trojan, Marinnet, Jefferson, Harbor Master, and now my 43 DC. I have seen the name a few other places, and rarely do people forget my name at any marina. Will Shelton

For my 36 I went with Hatt Trick, which I'm sure there are quite a few, but it is the third boat I have owned and my enjoyment of playing a little hockey now and then I thought it fit pretty well. I also thought that selling one boat , buying another with out any problems whatsoever within two months was a pretty neat trick.

My parents boats over the years were all named Mad Millie, Moms name, since their first boat was built in the basement of a NYC firehouse (if you could imagine how that turned out). Needless to say she wasn't to happy with the first one, but they got better over the years. Everyone would ask her why are you mad, you seem very happy. :)

Over the years I have seen far too many articles in boating journals on "worst boat names"- I think it is something that they run when they need to fill up space. I am curious to hear of GOOD boat names anyone's seen, since naming things is not my forte to say the least...I'm always impressed by the cleverness of others. For example I never would have thought of "Knit Wits", which has always seemed to me to be one of the best boat names I'd ever heard.

A couple of other Hatteras names as seen on InTheBite.com:

“Chupacabra" - 60' Hatteras Convertible
Sometime ago while on a hunting trip in south Texas, Captain Dave Noling, Clay Hensley and Captain John Uhr watched a documentary one evening about the mysteries of the “Chupacabra”. Chupacabra” is said to mean “goat sucker”. The legend has it that the “Chupacabra” lives in the El Yunge rain forest high up in the lush tropical jungle. The “Chupacabra” is said to have preyed upon nearly every animal in the forest with its massive appetite for blood. This has also lead to the conclusion that the “Chupacabra” being deprived of its blood supply, has now resorted to the lower elevations in the El Yunge and preys on the easier resources of the farms. Chickens, Rabbits, and Goats have all been found completely in tact but bloodless from the legend of the “Chupacabra”. A short time later, the owner of the 60’ Hatteras asked Captain John if he had any suggestions for a name for the boat. “Chupacabra” immediately came to mind. That’s the story behind the Chupacabra. When you are out there on the rip and see the 60’ Hatteras “BEWARE OF THE CHUPACABRA"!

"Palmetto Lady" - 48' Hatteras Convertible
Stickers and license plates are commonplace when it comes to catchy slogans or sayings about ones State. Have you ever seen the bumper sticker "Virginia is for lovers" or the Florida license plate that states "The Sunshine State"? Another one that comes to mind is "First in Flight". Can you guess that one? How about a state that declares itself as the "Palmetto State"? Whether this boat owner is at home or on his 48' Hatteras he wants everyone to know the pride he has for his homeport, so he named his boat the "Palmetto Lady", which would be the State of South Carolina!

Having read all the posts on this thread (I think), I was surprised that I did not see any ref to "Party Hatt" as a boat name.

Ok, I have too much time to myself in the car in a long commute, on a new assignment.

That is a Great name for a Hatteras! May be I will have to think about changing... BUT, that would be bad luck.

This is a wonderful forum...loving it.

After my 5 all went to prep school, college, and 4 to grad school i named my 43DC "Tuition's Done"

One of the funniest i've seen is a Canadian friend with a 36 Chris who named a beat up tender "No big ting" His wife made him upgrade to a slightly larger and even more beat up tender that she named "It Gruesome"
