Byron, one more. Does it have AIS?
If so, what is the registered name at this time?

Update: I was crawling around in the space behind the dash learning the wiring tonight and I found a little black box that says "Nobeltec AIS 100". How about that? The boat does have AIS! Power is going to it and the antenna is hooked up, so I chased the NMEA output to the back of the computer but it WAS NOT PLUGGED IN to the computer. Isn't that nice? I know there was a tech working on the computer recently just before I bought the boat so I guess that one just never got hooked back up.

It's just the receive type with no transmit capabilities, but still it would have been nice to have during that 30-hour overnight run across the Gulf . We had to identify many radar targets on a dark overcast and rainy night that turned out to all be commercial fishing boats. Having them identified by AIS on the screen would have been SO easy!

Just out of curiosity, why would it have been so much easier had you known those targets were commercial fishing boats?

That's about all you'll find out there at night beyond oil rigs, and neither tend to move very much, but avoidance issues would be the same.

C'mon Randy, who wouldn't like targets at night already identified for them? The more info a captain has the better and safer it is, or didn't they teach you that in class? Sure that's all that is SUPPOSED to be out there, but with known targets already identified one can focus on the targets that are not identified like floating containers or other hazards to navigation.

Maybe in Tennesee commercial fishing boats don't tend to move very much but out in the Gulf they are hardly stationary. You are the only person I can imagine who would ever argue against AIS info being helpful. It was devised to help avoid marine accidents and is mandated by the Coast Guard for all Commercial vessels. With that in mind, how could you possibly suggest that AIS wouldn't help?

Out here we use it to determine if we need the shotgun on the bridge or not.

It didn't say it wouldn't help, but I just don't see it making anything easier. A target is a target, isn't it?

Spoken like a true mountain man.

Seriously, this reminds me of the USS Montana bit where the skipper was expecting a lighthouse to get out of his way. I'm really not putting down AIS, but I really don't see how it would make things easier on a rainy night unless you're thinking something out there might get out of your way which would allow you to concentrate on things that won't. The other vessels have to be equipped with AIS for it to do any good anyway.

That's precisely the point. If all of your targets are indeed commercial fishing boats then they will have AIS so they will automatically be identified on screen, it's just as simple as that. Anything not already identified for you is where you can focus your attention. Advantage: AIS.

I've never had it on any of my past Gulf crossings and I didn't have it this time and did just fine, but I will certainly enjoy the advantage of having more info at my disposal on the next trip.

For what it's worth, Clearwater to Panama City is not the shortest possible route. I just figured you would want to take advantage of your speed/range capabilities and make it a shorter, more enjoyable trip for you and your crew.

Shorter more enjoyable trip for you and your crew?
From the posts and pictures viewed on this site, Byron had crew "volunteers"
ready to make the trip with him, from the pictures, can it be more enjoyable?
If the crew of the "SWEET MELISSA" had 1/2 as good of a time bringing her home as i have with Byron and Melissa tied to the dock it was an excellent trip. Hell half the fun is just getting on the water.

Remeber this is Byrons thread!!!!

Am I missing something here? You guys are talking about AIS to identify targets and that's valuable. But AIS also tells you what the target is like a 700' tanker or a 50' fishing boat and it also tells you the direction it's heading and how fast it's going Right? So is this what you guys are talking about? If so then the idea that it makes things easier and safer is kind of a given isn't it?

Byron sounds like you had an un eventfull trip home. That's the best kind of get home / shake down. Good luck with with her she's a great boat!!!

What an amazing boat very well thought out and set up. Will you be cruising in New Zealand waters? Just kidding good luck hope it brings many happy memories for you and your family....

I was looking for the off switch myself, but I do want to learn more about Byron enjoying his beautiful yacht!

THANKS! My wife and I are having an absolute BLAST moving our stuff from the 58 on board the new boat and figuring out where to put everything. There's tons more room, but still so many things to find new places for. It's a fun problem to have though! I'm trying to get rid of as much stuff as possible, but you know how that goes.

This new boat is causing so much controversy. There is only one solution...Byron, you need to free yourself from this thing. I'll take it off your hands for $50,000. That's a good deal for you!

That's incredibly generous of you Krush and I really appreciate your concern for my well being. Like I mentioned much earlier in this thread, nobody can put a damper on the fun that I am having right now no matter how hard they try. Besides, there's not much controversy when everyone recognizes and agrees on the source of the problem.

Thank you for the offer, but I think I'll just take the advice of the various PM's that I've been getting this afternoon and simply ignore the BS and continue to enjoy the new boat! :)

Making a decision is but the first step...Standing by it ?....not so easy. Time will tell. Pat

Almost forgot.... Nice Ride!!!

That is one awesome freaking boat! Sheesh... you stole her on top of it.... Niiiice.

THANKS Karl! Yep, this depressed boat market flat-out MADE me make the move. I always keep an eye on the boat market, but I wasn't really planning on moving up for several more years because I had just got the 58YF just about right. Once the economy began making good boats go for pennies on the dollar it was time to re-evaluate when the right time is to make a move. It just got to be far too much boat for the money to pass up, especially because I truly felt that this particular boat was THE RIGHT BOAT. Those don't come along too often.

I just passed through Pensacola last Tuesday, but only stayed at the Wharf for the evening or I'd have invited you over for a look-see. I'll be back that way in the Spring, so hopefully I'll see you then. :)

So when we getting more Pictures?
Dont' forget the engine room too ;)
