  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
38' CONVERTIBLE-Series II (1987 - 1991)
Installed a thru hull airmar 509lhw in my 38 hatteras this spring, and it is causing interference to the point I am down 180 rpms and several knots in speed.

It’s been suggested by my yard and installer I really need to replace with a 599lhw which is a pocket mount transducer so nothing of the size is sticking through the hull causing this effect. Has anyone had a pocket mount done with good experience?

Cough, cough, bull ship, cough..
That ducer is not going to take aweigh 180 RPM on both mains.
What other work (prop) work was done on this haul?

None at all. I’m told it’s like dragging a bucket underneath due to the size, about 24”L x6”w x 5” high

Never had an issue prior to install

i removed about the same size transducer and fairing block and i DID NOT gain any rpms or any speed so i doubt your transducer made you lose this

Nothing changed except adding this.

They did understand the difference between the 24" dimension being parallel vs perpendicular to the keel, right?

I'm finding it hard to believe also. I removed two dead transducers and fairings of similar dimensions from my hull, and didn't notice any performance change remotely like that.

How much paint added to the running gear?
Last fuel filter change?

Paint is fresh filters new. Not engine related. It’s related to the placement and size of the transducer solely. Portside midship.

They do. It seems like the fact the location being almost inline with port prop is a big issue and due to size placement is tough

Do you hear any cavitation?

I looked on Airmar's site to get an idea of the configuration, and I can not find the numbers you referenced.

Would you have a link to this X-ducer?

It’s a beast and I’m sure with a bigger boat a non issue

Your boat is bigger than mine.

Clearly Airmar's search feature sucks, and yes, it's a large proturdance (my made-up word for $#it sticking out of the hull). But I still find it hard to believe that's causing that kind of interference.

Anyway, I have no recommendations about cavity installations. The only time I've seen that was on a 38 Henriques that was serviced at the same yard, and those were molded in at the factory. Even with all that streamlining, the boat was still a pig.

Update, transducer was pulled and holes glassed picked up 4.5mph and can achieve wot again up to rated 2500rpm

Freaking amazing.
So What is your next ducer plan?

I have a fairing and 200/60 transducer on my hull that looks like a small torpedo. This has me thinking, since it really don't work.
