  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
45' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1968 - 1975)
As of today Napa is offering 20% off with use of code TAILGATE20. I just paid $105. per five gal. Here’s some interesting oil trivia, DELO, as in DELO 100, is an acronym for Diesel Engine Lubricating Oil.

Wow. Great price thanks for the tip!! What do you go to the store and have them deliver it there and you pick it up. The Napa near me doesn’t usually keep it in stock. Thanks again!!

You just order it and have it shipped to whatever store you wish.

I buy at the local fisherman supply. $89 a pail. Check your local fisherman supply if you have one. $105 is a good price too. I have paid $150 a pail sometimes.

I used this NAPA oil during covid when Delo 100/40w was no where to be found, immediately I had the smokiest engines around especially on a cold start. When Delo was available again I swithced, and was back to normal starts - not needing apologies to my neighbors again.

Anyone else have this issue?

That is interesting. I use the napa, get smoke but old motors LOL. Don't have anything to compare to.

You have to imagine where the blue smoke comes from. Residual oil in the rings? Residual oil in the air-box?
And NO residual DELO oil when you started cold (no blue smoke)?
So your rings and air box may have been dry oil starting on the Chevron oil?
I really have no clue but I do have to wonder about some of these comments.

We had customers blame shell oil and went back to NAPA for the same issues.

Strange ship happens.

I used NAPA oil for two or three oil change cycles, and the smoke on start up especially when cold was substantial and took several minutes to clear up. Consumption wasn't noticably different. And like I said I switched back to DELO when I could get it and the smoke stopped immediately, cold or warm. Just wondering, I can't tell you why. Wondered if anyone else sees this kind of result.
We put 1000 miles on the boat this summer running up the inside passage to 51' North before turning around. No one carried DELO, or NAPA. It wasn't a problem as I carry extra but always wondered what other brand I'd use if needed. I guess any in a pinch.

Anything that says CF-2.
Plain CF would work for a short Pinch.

There is a special formula involved with these oils. I remember reading years ago, something to do with oil sheer and anti foaming around the piston rings and the side cylinder air ports.

Just got a new 55 gal barrel of Rotella T1 SAE 40w CF-2 rated oil from our oil guy last week. $803 for the barrel, comes to $14.60 a gal. We've been using this oil since we got the boat, I change it every 100 - 125 hrs. A slight puff of white smoke that clears immediately when starting in the summer, our first initial startup in the spring after winter storage we get a small cloud of white smoke that clears in 20 - 30 seconds, never any blue smoke.
I don't know why some oil would cause blue smoke, or who makes the NAPA oil. The oil guy insists the Shell Rotella is well within the 2 stroke Detroit oil requirement specs in his book. At least with our experience so far I can't dispute his claims
