  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
46' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1974 - 1981)
We recently purchased a Leopard 43 Powercat for a good customer. He's exploring mooring options at his dock on the TN River. He asked me about mooring whips. Taylor Made makes an 18' whip rated for 48,000#. While I used to build boat docks and seawalls I am NOT familiar with any whips that will hold 48k. The PC is about 26k dry. His dock is on a stretch that doesn't get a lot of wave action until football season. Then it gets ridiculous wave action from the Vol Navy on their wat to and from the stadium.

You guys ever used any whips this big? And unfortunately, I don't think we can get the bow pointed to the traffic. I think it will eating all the wake from the beam.

That is a fat boat. 22' wide.
I have been around those whips for small boats with mixed results. I have never been impressed.
Any way some dolphin-piles could be installed outboard or set moor-kedges outboard to hold the boat off of the dock.

Probably time to modify that dock to get that bow pointing out.

I would think they may work quite well. The bow on a cat is not tapered so the throw from the tip of the whip to the inboard side at the bow is more, giving more resistance against the incoming force.

I was thinking about this today. If / When you contact the whip vendor, ensure they understand it is a cat (twin hulled) boat.
There is twice the waterline to capture wave energy as the wake is just not on the surface but may be a few feet below the surface, in near sine-wave cycles.

Don't forget to mention the beam on the hull, that could make a difference as well, haha.

Thanks Guys, he has placed a call to Monarch and I believe that will be the route he goes.
