The topic of what to use on a 70s/80s Hatteras interior has been covered somewhat in several threads, but I’ve run into an issue. The product I’ve been using minwax tung oil is banned.

Googling says watco danish oil is a close substitute, but the AIs say Waterlox sealers are highly regarded as well.

Any strong opinions on a viable substitute for Minwax, if the goal is to roughly stick with the “factory look”?

I realize products may have advanced in the last 40 years, too so open to new ideas. Thanks all.

Does Sams have any more of their product? After the original Dupont 704C ran out, they had some made that was essentially the same stuff. I have purchased a couple of quarts in the past. Not sure if they still have any of it left.

I think I asked Ed at Sam’s marine last year and he told me they no longer stock the DuPont stuff but if you find out differently I’d like to know.

The last time I bought some of it, I had to pick it up in Ft Lauderdale. They would not ship it

I've used Watco and it works great!

Is this used to restore the finish? Does it leave a shine or satin finish. The label on the Amazon supply says it is used on unfinished wood.

Google minwax aerosol. You'll see it comes in several finishes.

You can find better sources than scamazon. They haven't a clue on how to use it.

So Minwax is a coating, and not a cleaner? What is recommended for cleaning? A good furniture polish such as Guardian?

... or.. Amazon is your friend..

Unfortunately even the Amazon stores won’t ship. Had to cancel an order already.

No word from Sam’s either.

I’ve been using the minwax product for years just to recoat after a cleaning. I haven’t go through the process of a complete restore (not necessary yet)

@JD5652 did you use the watco danish or watco teak oil?

I'm pretty sure it's Watco Danish... I will be at the boat tomorrow and can pull the can to confirm.

Here's what I have in my ships stores. Have used both with good results.

Watco.webp

I think I’m going to give waterlox sealer / finish low voc version a try then put a final coat of the waterlox satin finish over it. Should be good for may years!
