  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' YACHT FISHERMAN (1970 - 1981)
anyone know if there is an access panel to get to the thru hull where the generator exhaust exits the side of the boat on a 53 my or 58yf. new genset going in so i am going to replace the hose as well. i know it is at least 25 years ols

Only one I know of is the hatch under the dinette table then crawl aft. Bilge monkey required.

my boat does not have the hatch under the dinette

No hatch there? Odd. Was it covered by flooring at time point?

Woudl have been easier to reach before the gem went in. someone young and nimble may be able to go around the front of the gen and over the stringers but tough one.

No hatch there on mine either

I am working on my #2 generator today so here is a picture of the hatch under the dinette table.

Wow, that's tight. The galley floor in an ED is 8" higher. One extra step down to the fwd stateroom and one extra step down to the hallway leading aft.

never was a hatch, i removed all flooring and there is no sign of any hatch ever being there. the genset is not in the hole yet, it is sitting where the dinette table goes. i went and took a look a minute ago and i may be able to lay on the batteries and get my thick ass back there, i will need a helper to hand me anything i may need cause once im in there im not coming out till its done.

Wow. Sure am glad I have a convertible.

The exhaust is beneath the stairs that go to the galley. The easier way was to crawl ovrt thr stb batteries or to cut a hatch on the wall that holds the woden stairs. On the first case you will need a very skiny person , What a PITA!

i am thinking that i can lay on the fwd part of the fuel tank and crawl over to the side

This thread has caused me to have a claustrophobic episode. I have a nosiy fan that I can't bring myself to reach.

Just do not attempt when alone, I was almost trapped in my 30' Trojan years ago. Too many spaces are easier to enter than exit.

Walt Hoover

Walt speaks the truth. It's all too easy to get stuck in the tight spaces below the living areas- engine rooms, battery compartments, etc. Always bring your cell phone in with you, make sure you can reach it, and have a standby who can help you get out if you need help. Don't do this stuff alone.

Ya'll ain't helping my mind any. Makings of a good horror show

Greetings from below the floor in 56MY. Easier to get in than out.

Hey, Big Bill: Let me know when you want to try and I will tie a rope around your feet, hook it to a winch, and pull you out! LOL

thanks johnny. i have been keeping my cellphone close during this process in case i get stuck. i found out that the stbd battery shelf was half ass fixed years ago due to rot....well since i had to remove the battery boxes to replace the shelf it was not so hard to get to the generator exhaust hose. NOW there was some questionable homemade parts in the exhaust system and since i am putting in a new genset i want all new exhaust. does anybody have a description or pictures of the generator exhaust on an early to mid 70's 53my or 58yf? location of the muffler, any high loops in the hose etc. thanks in advance

Generator muffler locations, 20KW NL, 6KW NG. Exhaust down to the mufflers, then up to the thru hulls. I hope this helps.
