  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
I can't seem to reach with my brush down the side of my hull from on deck. I've tried the "float around on a rubber dock"
thing and that lasted about 5 minutes before I realized I was certain to end up in the water.
I keep seeing this electric powered (battery) scrubber from Batavia that has an extra long reach, but it's not available in the U.S. until next year.
I do have a Ryobt scrubber that is similar and it works great on things like the swim platform, but it only has a limited reach, similar to something like a weed wacker.

Does anyone have any good tricks or maybe a line on a long powered scrubber like the Batavia?
Here is a link to the Batavia if anyone wants to see what it is:

I'm sure you've saved money on some other DIY project. Treat yourself to one of the local detail companies. They'll do a more thorough job and free up your time to pay for it by doing another "to do list" item. I justify my time verses yard rates to decide what "to do list" items I do, if possible, and the ones I hire out.

Yes for sure, but for weekly washing, what can be done for these hard to reach places?

Bob, are you getting detailed 2-3 times a year? Thats what I do and they do a good thorough job. Most of the time a good hosing keeps it very clean. after 2-3 months i might need a brush here and there but minor, not a scrubbing of the whole boat. We are clean whenever we take a trip.
As Sadey said you save tons of $ doing DIY mainainance on as much as you can plus then you really know your boat.

A trip to the sandbar or hook with a dip in the water to hit the water line and an excellent coat of wax on the hull is all I can offer.

An extendable pole like a shurehold with a brush will reach anywhere. No need for an electric powered gadget.
And if you polish(wax) the hull yearly, the cleanup is easy.

Thanks Sky, I looked up Shurehold. That's exactly what I need. With the curved attachment I should be in good shape!
The last pole I tried over the edge just bent on me. These look like much better quality.

I just ordered the 9 ft. Pole, angle adapter and 3 brushes I hate to say I'm excited to clean but I kinda am.

dont buy cheap crap for your cleaning brushes. surehold is good and there is one that the pole is almost triangle shaped, i saw it at FLIBS several years back, they said it was stronger than a round pipe and you didnt have to hunt around for the set pin since the 2 pieces could not turn on each other

It depends on where you are and also the time of the years. For example in miami in winter with weekly westerly winds bringing the city dirt and soot we need to wash the boat more often than in spring /summer with more rain and clean easterly wind.

The hull though remains clean longer, we usually wash it every couple of months.

Thanks Pascal, do you pull the boat to wash the hull? I think I need to learn how to properly clean it!

No! It depends. I usually do my 53 from the dock. For the 110 I run, my Detailer does it either from a work float or from the dinghy

Really no need to haul out for that. We get the hull compounded ever year again from a float

Yes it is. When I have the energy for it! All my stuff came in except the pole is on back order. Hopefully have soon and can attempt a proper wash!
