  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
41' CONVERTBLE-Series II (1986 - 1991)
I have a customer with a Capitol Gear in a 1986 45MY.

Boat runs great. We have been doing some docking practice. After repetative shifting, the trans will loose all pressure, and will not engage forward or reverse. If allowed to sit for awhile, its back to normal. I've taked the boat out for several 3+ hour runs, and its always fine. Normal slip exit, run for 3+hours, normal docking all is fine pressure is spot on. 5 or so practice docking, and pressure will drop to zero until it sits with the engine off.

He has done some work to correct the problem. The regulator spring was checking, and seems ok, and specs to the proper length. The plunger looks ok, and does not seem to be hanging up. Fluid has been changed, and screen and been cleaned. Fluid is proper level. Fluid was not burn. Trans is not getting hot.

It seems happy unless you ask of a alot of shifting in a short time frame.

Any foaming of fluid when it acts up?

Nope.
Best I can figure, if the pump was bad, it would be bad all the time, or pressure would drop as it warmed up. Is there anything in the clutch engagement that could be dunoing pressure?

Hynautic engine controls needs servicing.

Again, this is a customer boat, who is just asking for help, so I'm just getting familier with it.

The pump output goes to a Tee. The tee splits it to the selector, and also the cooler. The cooler returns to the pump. What is keeping all the flow/pressure from going to the cooler, and back to the pump? Wouldn't this be the path of least resistance?!?

is the other pump plumbed the same way? does it give any trouble? plug the line going to the cooler and see if that fixes it.

Sounds like there must be a pressure relief valve in there somewhere to control the flow back to the pump

The answer to the question is the regulator at the back of the pump. You could try swapping the regulator plunger and spring but, I am thinking given all of the shifting, the clutch pack. Have a read of the trouble shooting section in the manual that I posted in the other thread.

Hopefully you are only shifting at engine idle and not hammering the throttles.

And again, the manual clearly illustrates that the output side of the cooler goes to the T. Zoom in on the diagrams.

Take photos from the top that include the selector valve, cooler, hoses and pump all in the frame.
