I just spoke with Atlantic DD, and they need me to bring in the old zincs so they can match them. I know that there's one on the raw water pump, and I presume that there is one on the heat exchanger, but so far I haven't located it. Can anyone tell me precisely where on the heat exchanger it's located? Also, can I expect to find any besides these 2? Finally, can you tell me the size of the zincs? Thanks.

Zincs

Bob,

Can't tell you anything specific about the 92 in this regard but engine zincs are usually standard pencil-types that are available at any marine store. I'm confident that the price will be much less than DD.

This may not help you but each 8V71TI on our boat has two large pencil zincs on the heat exchanger. They are in fairly plain view. They have large brass heads so they are very easy to spot. But if someone painted them white (Why?) they won't be quite so obvious.

I'm sure a 92 expert will shortly arrive on the scene to give you specific info for your engine.

Zincs

Bob: Look at the inlet side of your heat exchanger and the that of you raw water pump. You should see a square or hexagonal plug in each case. Those are your zinc holders.

I just bought 8 zincs for my 8v71ti DD's from Atlantic Diesel here in LI, NY. I told them they were for 8v71 engines and they got them in two minutes for me. They're about $10 each without the holders. The length is 3-7/8" and the diameter is 3/4".

There are multiple H/E configs....

... the one I have on my 6V92TAs have the following:

1. Zinc plugs on the inlet AND outlet of the gear cooler (on the suction side of the raw water pump)

2. Zinc plug on the raw water pump elbow.

3. Zinc plugs on both INLET and OUTLET of the Heat Exchanger.

That's it on my engines - YMMV.

Bob, I have same model/year and engine as yours. I have a zinc on the raw water pump housing, one on the inlet side and one on the outlet side of the H/E. All have a brass nut that is the holder for the pencil zincs. Nuts and pencil zincs readily available at West Marine. Take out an old one and go to store. PS. If an old zinc breaks off and leaves residue in the threaded female side the brass nut, immerse it in muriatic acid and it is gone in a few minutes.
