    Kite Power for Ships

Interesting way to reduce fuel costs. A large lift kite attached to the bow which creates both lift and thrust.

Interesting concept in these expensive fuel times. I know at least one individual who might not approve, however.

No, its for real. http://skysails.info/index.php?L=1 is the website of the company that is building these skysails.

The pic isn't entirely accurate as the sail is actually a kite that generates more lift the higher it flies ( 600 feet or more). The builders estimates 20% fuel savings with 50% short term fuel savings in optimal conditions.

It can operate at 50 degrees off the wind, controlled similar to a parachute.

The device is used for cargo ships at present and the manufacturer plans to increase the sail size substantially in future.

It may be a great idea for motor cruisers.
